Frame is still made out of wood, but it now has a suspension and gearless brushless motors, with a 7.5 mph top speed!
I'm the project foreman for a memorial garden that is going to be constructed this spring/summer. We need to construct a wheelchair-accessible walkway from the parking lot to the garden. It is probably about 300 feet of walkway, mostly going slightly downhill. It is located in Southern Wisconsin, exposed to full sun all day, so it needs to stand up to the weather conditions. I have done some research on concrete and asphalt, and I'm thinking a wooden walkway might be cheapest and easiest to build. It would be in the ground for the most part, and possibly elevated slightly to ease the slope downhill so it is up to code.
I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on this. Is wood the best way to go, considering the slope? Is pouring concrete on a slope difficult? How much maintenance can we expect to do with wood, asphalt and concrete? If a wood walkway, is there a paint or sealer we can get locally that will seal it very well, provide some traction and withstand direct sun? Thanks!
This article gives hints and tips about creating a wheelchair ramp. Maybe you can use some of the ideas when creating your walkway:

My father needs to use a wheelchair or walker to get to the car and our ramp is made from treated wood We don't want to ruin the wood. What should we use to melt the ice or at least for traction.
ice melt ,water softener salt, rock salt , table salt,
salt salt
it wont hurt the treated wood that's part of what they treat it with
Wooden I'm guessing would be cheaper but I'm not sure. Please only people who know what they are talking about. Tx
You'll need outdoor grade plywood, 4x4's and 2x4's. Draw it out, figure out how much wood, and call your local builder supply.
i had seen on a home improvement show some years back where they replaced a standard threshold with a barrier free one for wheelchair access eaze...i am now in need of one myself for my home and can't find one and none of my home improvement stores even know what i am talking about..this threshold would eliminate the wooden lip so you can wheel right in...i would appreciate if anyone has any information on this..thanks
You will have to remove the existing threshold and install a low-rise threshold. The threshold is 3/8" tall and then you'll have to install a door sweep on the existing door to keep moisture out.
Good Luck!!!!

arkansas wheelchair ramps - choosing wood or portable wheelchair ...
Additionally aluminum portable ramps do not have to be treated occasionally to sustain the life of the ramp. There is no painting or staining involved either. Marks and scratches do not show up as easily on aluminum ramps. The rain in Arkansas does tremendous damage to wooden ramps. In addition they can become slippery for those aiding those in wheelchairs. For those attempting to build their own wheelchair ramps, let me state that the portable model is really what you should consider installing. The angle ramps need to be to be comfortable to maneuver is something an expert is trained in. The situation makes a huge difference too. If someone is available to aide someone in a wheelchair, the...
