Wheelchair Workout

Okay this is a serious question so i would like serious grown up answers please. I've noticed that most people in wheelchairs seem to have a nice upper body build as well as strengh so I was thinking of buying a wheelchair and using it as part as my workout routine ( pushing myself around my neighborhood which is full of hills) but I don't know how people would view that. Do you think that would be disrespectful or a smack in the face to people who have no choice but to be in a wheelchair?

I know a friend that was leg-a-cap. Thats what he calls himself. Anyways, he doesn't work out on his wheelchair at all. All he does is lift weights. Since he can't jog, he does extra weight lifting which equals stronger upper body.

Can you get to a gym with weights machines? especially at low-tech gyms you might be able to remove the seat from in your way and sit in your chair and reach the weights.

Try the kind of weights that are on pulleys and you can hold your arm out straight and lift the weight by pressing down in front of you. Do it again with the arm out to the side and lift by pulling forward so your arm stays parallell to the floor.

That kind of weight machine, especially with no seat attached, shouldn't cost much so maybe have a look at local or internet sports equip stores if you want to be able to do it at home.

You could also do similar exercises with free weights. Start with a kg or 2 and use them how you like, work out where you're feeling the burn and decide if that is a muscle you want to work on. They will work your arms more than your chest though.

Exercises for your abs will depend on what functional ability you have there and you'd be best off talking to a physiotherapist who is familiar with you and how your conditions affect you.

I use a wheelchair and looking for a way to get in some cardio in my workout routine I do chair dance, Tia chi. and weight training but can't find cardio workout for home.

are you any good at sports? wheel chair users can play basketball and stuff like that. as long as you have a MANUAL wheel chari lol not an electric one. you can go to a park and do laps around the track with one. the faster you go and more strength you have to use, the more your heart will pump. and thats is the simple extent of a cardio workout to get your blood circulating and your heart rate up.
