Is this the ultimate wheelchair?
Sam Hamner

Do you agree that manual wheelchair technology has come very far particularly in the last 20 or so years? This one is nothing like the clunkers found at hospitals.
I would love to have one but the price is way above my budget!
It looks like most of the answerers so far have not even looked at the site!

My question is about the coolnees of the chair - laser etched "tatoos" on the titanium frame with carbon fibre seating.
Yes it is fully custom built - made to your personal specifications so comfort and support will be made however you want it, just read the site already!

There is no way any medicaid or whatever will ever pay for such a chair. It is a luxury item - like a Ferrari or a Rolls Royce car, something to drool over.

Tilite Z10 the ultimate wheelchair? Hardly.

Overpriced marketing gimmick would be more accurate. "Only 110 will be made..." Ppfft. The limited production run is an excuse to inflate the price and create an air of exclusivity, in my opinion. No thanks.

Edit: Around $7600 for the frame alone is insane. That's not even including the cost of other "options" - like wheels, cushion, back, etc.

Re: your additional comments. I'm fully aware each Z10 chair is custom built. But then again, so are the other substantially less expensive Tilite models & manufacturers. Paying that much money for a over hyped manual chair is absurd.

As far as the carbon fiber seating/sideguards/back are concerned, yes, they're certainly aesthetically pleasing. In terms of function, however, they're no different from non-carbon ones. They're nothing new in the world of wheelchairs. You can order carbon fiber seating/sideguard/back components from ADI and put them on almost any manual rigid chair yourself. ( http://www.adirides.com/carbonseating.ht ml )

It's the same deal with the laser etched tattoos. Personally, I don't like them. I prefer the look of my unpolished titanium so buffering out scratches is still an option. And I know with the way I use my chair, the tattoos would be scratched up or rubbed off in no time anyway.

My fully equipped chair cost less than half that! Spinergy Spox wheels, Schwalbe tires, cushion, etc. Btw, it looks as though once all of the Z10's are sold, Tilite will start offering some of the "exclusive" options on their other models as well.

So, again I say: Thanks, but no thanks. I stand by my original comments.

Just for this question they all live on their own.
anything they would need to live on their own.
items need to get around
and computers and phones
alarms

I think that some one who has cerebral palsy and has a electric wheelchair. Some of those chairs can cost as much as a small house. They break down and wear out and need replacing and repairs.

For your information someone with cerebral palsy can live on their own, with the right supports.

My disabled son is involved with a theatre group called The Freewheelers. Can anyone help obtain some props?
DRC ( Dispositivo Robotico para Caminar ) www.biorobotica-aplicada.com

The Freewheelers Theatre Company brings disabled and non-disabled actors and supporters, production teams and the local community together.
They use theatre and dance, wheelchair and voicebox technology, multimedia, animations, puppets and shadows to create innovative work. They are putting on a production in October and are looking for around 100 old landline phones as props. They do not have to be working models. Does anyone know where to get these? I am waiting fro a reply from BT but other suggestions would be welcomed.

Join your local Freecycle and post on there. You'll probably get loads.

If religion is bad because it is a crutch, what does that make wheelchairs?
DRC ( Dispositivo Robotico para Caminar ) www.biorobotica-aplicada.com

Why do anti-religionists frown upon people in wheelchairs? Everyone is equal, whether they use a crutch, wheelchair, cane, or walker. As a Christian I don't think we should hate people because they allow technology or religion to help them deal with challenges.

Excellent analogy. I totally agree with you. Each of us should be allowed to have something physical or spiritual to help us deal with the difficulties we face in life.

  • Panasonic Develops Bed-Shaped Robot Transformable into Wheelchair ...

Technology.am (Sept. 21, 2009) — Panasonic Corporation has developed a bed-shaped robot which can be transformed into a wheelchair, which will allow the elderly or people with limited mobility to maintain an independent lifestyle, reducing the need for assistance and expanding their mobility.

As the robot can transform itself from a bed into a wheelchair and vice versa at the command of the user, it eliminates not only the need for the user to transfer between the bed and a wheelchair but also the risks and burden associated with the transfer.

The robot can also expand the user’s range of activities. Now, the user can join the family meal by converting the bed into a wheelchair and moving to the dining table without the need of assistance from other people.
