my mother-in -law is wheelchair-bound for the rest of her life... I want to build her a ramp to allow her husband and 2 sons (they live in the same house) to let her enjoy the clean air and out-of-doors. Is there a recommended slope (inches per foot) for a wheelchair ramp NOT A HANDYCAMP RAMP? She is unable to propel herself but I feel She would bebefit from the air outside...
I built handicap ramps for FEMA after Hurricane Katrina and the federal standard then was 1 inch per foot and after each 20ft a landing was to be made for resting whether or not electric or self propelled or someone else was pushing. That standard also went for those whom needing canes or crutches to walk also. Mind you ,now these ramps where built off a deck landing right beneath the door of either a mobile home or travel trailer,so if it was 40 inches from the ground to just below the door;you were looking at 40 ft ramp with the deck landing and the 20 ft rest landing that could be a minimum of 5ftx5FT we had to take into account the width of the chair and height of the person ;in case the rest landing had to make any turns in a different direction. Say perhaps easy access to automobile. We usually used 5/8 4x8 to run the ramp stilted with 2x4 with 15 inch gaps with 2x4 hand rails and floor guide boards.

the angle of elevation of a ramp with this slope.
The slope is related to the angle of inclination as follows:
tan (inclination) = slope
slope = arctan (inclination)
If the slope is 1/12=0.08333, the inclination angle is
arctan(0.08333)
or 4.8 degrees.

Please help me with this problem! I am SO stressed and I have been working on this problem for an hour and forty five minutes! Thank you so much!
You are an architect. Your job is to decide which wheelchair ramp is the steepest.
a. One that gains 70 feet of altitude for every 900 feet it travels horizontally.
b. One that gains 65 feet of altitude for every 850 feet it travels horizontally.
c. One that gains 74 feet of altitude for every 875 feet it travels horizontally.
2nd part of the problem.
The ramps must be no steeper than 1/12. Do the ramps meet the requirments? Why or why not? If you are building a ramp for and entrance that has 7 steps each 6in in height, how long would the ramp have to be?
Please help me! I am confused how to make a graph, since the numbers are so large as well. Thank you so much! :)
Slope = Rise/Run
a. Rise = 70 ft, Run = 900 ft
Slope = 70/900 = 0.07777....
b. Rise = 65 ft, Run = 850 ft
Slope = 65/850 = 0.0765
c. Rise = 74 ft, Run = 875
Slope = 74/875 = 0.0846
Ramp C is the steepest

2nd Part
Slope of 1/12 is 0.08333...., ramps A and B meet the requirements, but not C

7 steps * 6 inches = 42 inches, this is the rise, you have to find the run
The maximum slope is 1/12
1/12 = 42/Run
Run = 12 * 42
Run = 504 inches

Size 15" x 14" x 1-1/2" to 3".
3" opening provides relief for the coccyx/tailbone area
Firm foam cushion for use in the car, home or office and fits most bucket seats
...for a wheel chair ramp.
A wheelchair has a 15 foot run. What is its rise?
A wheelchair ramp rises 2 feet. What is its run?
CAn some one tell me how to do this you dont need to give me the answer just the equation.
THANK YOU!!!!
I"ll set them up:
1/12 = x/15 solve for x.
1/12 = 2/x solve for x.
Essentially, you are finding fractions equal to 1/12.
i have been in a wheelchair for five days so I am pretty pathetic to begin with. But I really only stop but running into something. There must be a better way then running into a tree.
Bob _ Thank You. Your ideas certainly sound less painful. - Don't think I was kidding about the tree. My first wheelchair ramp flew me through a parking lot (mostly Empty) and into the sidewalk which ejected me into a tree
you could attach an anchor to throw out? Or tape friends to the wheelchair and use them as bumpers? Run into a car instead, the side panels have some give....
I would give you a seriuos answer if I could think of a reliably good safe answer.
