what steps would i take to check the safety of a manual wheelchair?
Chicks dig scars

If you are just looking for the safety of the chair. First be sure the brakes are working well. The foot rests should also be able to lift up and down easily and able to swing open. the chair should fit the person comfortably so make sure the backrests are proper the arm rests are in the right location and the person can move the wheels easily.

In what position should the wheelchair be positioned when transporting handicapped students, and is this amandatory safety measure?
I know the wheelchair faces forward. What I need to know is if the wheelchair can be reclining,or should it be in an upright position for safety.I was taught when I drove a handicapped van that the chair should always be completely sitting upright.

it is upright. strapped in at certain assigned pressure points.
it is federal mandate.

paraplegic olympics winner 1991 now a conference speaker health and safety accident prevention.I have university project and chose to do my seminar this monday june 12 th on safety accident prevention and I cannot find a picture of michel in wheel chair at olympics which i remember was posted during his conferences on safety awareness at a mining industry i had worked for.Michel lost his 2 legs due to a mining accident at the age of 28 and has dedicated his life to motivating employees to look after their security and health and prevent accidents. My focal point of seminar is prevention and a safety award program to achieve desired safe behavior and to me Michel Juteau mission to responsibilize workers to their own safety is in direct line with my views and I find him very admirable and concise.

What are the needs of an elderly person in a wheelchair or walking frame with regards to accommodation?
Providing Medical care

My grandfather is coming to live with us for a while and i want to make things easy for him! And what can i take into consideration with regards to SAFETY when redesigning my house?

Thank You! (**,)

I have grab bars in the bathroom..toilet and shower..seat in the shower, handicap toilet, but a riser works just as well. Ramp into the house, have a carpenter make about a 4 inch platform for a comfortable chair to sit on, to make it easier for him to get in and out of..I also have a lift chair, but they are to expensive for a short time visit..your doors should be OK..one other thing raise the bed with blocks of wood that are about the same size as a brick..helps immensely..no throw rugs..lucky you to have a grandfather...and lucky him for having you..Enjoy your visit..

  • Wheelchair Safety: What You Can Do Right Now

Wheelchair safety is a factor that affects everyone, disabled and able bodied alike. If an able bodied drive hits a disabled person in a wheelchair, both people's lives will be forever altered. I would love to see some public safety campaign developed to raise the awareness concerning wheelchair safety. I would love to hear comments and suggestions about how to get the message accross.
