Oh boy I really messed up last night. I was leaving church with my gimp husband, and of course he had to ride in his wheelchair because his back was acting up. Well we have a crown victoria with a rack on the back that holds the wheelchair. So we placed the wheelchair on it, but when I was driving home, I realized that I couldn't smell or hear my annoying husband. When I looked in the mirror, to my surprise, he was still in the wheelchair!! I couldn't hear his moans going 45 down the highway which was good, but I can't believe he even stayed in the chair going that speed!
He was mads at me when we got home, but when isn't he? I feel bad that he made it the whole way, but that's life.
Sweet church ladies, has this ever happened to you? I was just in such a hurry to make it back for bingo night. Blesses!

Your husband sounds like mine, always complaining about the most insignificant things. It's funny that you mentioned this incident, the same thing happened to me. My husband had knee surgery and needed a wheelchair. I was trying to hook it to the rack on the car and meant to get him down but I saw my friend Betsy and started chatting with her. After that I just got in the car and started driving. I'm a chain smoker so I'd thrown a few cigarette butts out the window, and I ate a banana and threw the peel out the window so when we got home he had a banana peel plastered to his head, and cigarette burns in his clothes. I can't believe he got mad about something so stupid.
Hi there,
I am looking to purchase a small hybrid car that does not have much trunk space. However, the one caveat is that I need to be able to transport a wheelchair. I do not want to put it in the backseat and it does not fit in the trunk. Does anyone know of any roof rack system that can be used for wheelchairs, similar to bike racks? Thanks for any help!!
Hi,
actually, the Prius generation 2 (current body style) holds folding wheelchairs. The rear seats split and drop down flat and you have four "D" rings in the back to secure your chair down.
As far as motorized wheelchairs/scooters go, there are class one (1" receiver) hitches that you can have mounted on a Prius. You are not able to tow with a Prius, it has no transmission and the CVT does not support towing forces. However, many people put on the class ones to hold bike racks.
The only option for a roof rack is a double bar system that you would have to strap the chair to. This is not recommended for several reasons. One, you will be defeating the areodynamics of the vehicle by adding the additional wind drag of a roof rack, chair or no. Two, you will have a hard time keeping the chair strapped to the rack with currently available systems and the last thing you want is the chair coming loose as you drive. Three, having to lift the chair up and down off the roof is going to be a bear and will probably damage the roof/door frame after a while, just from the exertion of the lifting and removal.
Bring your chair to a dealership and try it out. Be sure to tell the salesperson what you want to do first and make sure they know that you will only consider purchasing if this setup works for you.
Another option is the Toyota Matrix or Scion (Toyota) Xb. Very low lift-in height, seats fold flat, but the mileage is in the 35-36 range. I've seen both for around $17,000, and the 2008 Xb has Stability Control, Traction Control, side seat and side curtain airbags in addition to air, CD and keyless.
Good luck.
Carrier can be folded up flat vertically against the rear of the vehicle saving space when not in use
Steel expanded mesh surface with raised 3" side rails
Integrated solid ramp for quick loading and unloading

Dont get a roof rack, you need to get an outside wheelchair lift for this vehicle. There are several different options, they can either be electric or manual. In most cases they will be attached to the back of your car by a trailer hitch. If your car has a trunk you can get a wheelchair lift that is removable. Or you can have it put on a swing away arm so that you can get access to the trunk.
This resource discuss outside vehicle lifts, their advantages and disadvantages, plus what to look for in a wheelchair lift:

LMAO!!! I was hoping you would have a link! That's good, if I had to be in one I'd probably have all kinda crap on it; gun rack, beer cooler holder, a winch for going off-road, a stereo. Man, it would be awesome!
It might have been the late 70's, but I'm fairly certain it was the early 80's. I remember young guys playing whellchair basketball. I am trying to rack my brain to remember it. Can anyone help?
Thanks, no it wasn't "Coming Home". This movie was about a younger crowd. High school or early college. I remember the movie was fairly popular and really good. I'm not sure if it was based on true events or not. The wheelchair basketball players were late teens to early twenties and it had to do with their team.

Designing for Livability Liveblog Part 3 - Seattle Transit Blog
The afternoon sessions here were breakout sessions of smaller groups, with each session having a handful of presenters (usually experts in the field or government officials).
The first session I saw was Integrating Bus Rapid Transit in Neighborhoods which actually focused more on defining the type of arterial BRT that both Swift from Community Transit and RapidRide from King Country Metro represent. On the continuum of BRT, this type of BRT lacks its own right-of-way and instead has to use a variety of techniques — jump queues, business access and transit lanes, traffic signal priority — to give buses priority on busy city streets.
Community Transit’s Swift — opening last next month — is largely focused on reducing dwelling time, said June DeVall, Manage of Strategic Planning at Community Transit. With three extra-wide entrances, off-board payments and ORCA readers, on-board (rather than front-loading) bike racks, and marked locations at each station indicating where the bus entrances will be — it seems like Community Transit actually has gone to great lengths to reduce dwell times. In fact, it’s slightly more impressive than Metro’s RapidRide which won’t feature off-board payment at all stations, will retain front-loading bike rikes, and will lack other amenities of Swift. On the other hand, RapidRide will have up to six lines whereas Swift is just one route.
