Do electric wheelchair motors need the controller?

I'm building a tank-like robot, and i'm buying a pair of wheelchair motors. I was wondering if these motors require the motor controller that was originally on the wheelchair? I'm going to buy some controllers for the tank (that control the flow of electricity from an input signal given by the remote). Would these controllers need to be linked through the original controller or just to the motors?

It depends what you want to achieve.
For sure the motor controllers provide a great deal of things you want, but reverse engineered-it to modify it for your goal may be quite a challenge.
It’s like asking do you need a transmission on a car.
There are many vehicles like lawn mowers and tractors that do not have a transmission!

Hope this properly answers your question

Speed controller for 24v wheelchair motor (for robot).?

I would like to have precise control of exactly how fast the motor moves my robot. What is the best way to do this? Kind of new to most of this so detail would help me a lot, but any help would be appreciated!

If its a DC motor, all you have to do is regulate the voltage. Change of voltage = change of speed. Reversal of poles = reversal of rotation.
If it is an AC motor, you will have to adjust the frequency using a VFD (variable frequency drive).

is there any kind of wheelchair with a motor not controlled by the ...

My brother is so tall now that my mother and i have a hard time pushing him if there is an incline or decline, we aren’t strong enough to push him uphill and we lose control if it goes downhill. this prevents us from taking him a lot of places. we need to have some sort of motorized wheelchair that the person pushing can control because he is too developmentally disabled to be able to drive and steer himself.
