I need to find out more information on purchasing a wheelchair lift for my minivan. I have a handicapped 5 year old daughter and I know nothing about wheelchair lifts, the cost etc. I need something that I can use a long time (as she grows, the wheelchair will also). Please give me a good local (Portland OR) resource, information, or just your experience/knowledge on the subject.

Hello, in my experience the lift depends on the make/model of the minivan and the model of the wheelchair. There are an assortment of lifts out there as you might have noticed and most places have them in stock and ready to ship. For a lift that will be able to accommodate a growing child you're probably looking at around $1000+ installation. On a side note those lifts (the Harmar) come with 3 year manufacturer warranty which is longer than most. I'm in need of renting a wheelchair accessible van or minivan for my grandfather for one day (for my wedding this Saturday) and due to the time constraints am looking for an option that is close by for pickup and drop-off. I'm located in Hacienda Heights (91745), CA. I know about the options located around LAX and Santa Ana.
Does anyone know any closer options? Anything that would get the job done! Thanks!
I am handicapped myself, and unfortunately the closest accessible van rental is probably the agency in Santa Ana. As stated, the market for this type of vehicle is extremely limited.
Is there a dial-a-ride type of service in your area that could possible offer any help, or perhaps a medical transportation service. I see lots of these vehicles when I go to my many doctor visits. I believe there is a taxi company in Downey (Fiesta Cab) that has an accessible vehicle, but that might be too expensive.

At the moment, every week mom and I go to a movie, she loads my wheelchair up into the back of her PT Cruiser, which puts a LOT of weight into the back. We're looking for minivans where I can drive my chair into the passenger's seat, but that it's still fuel efficient, so when she's not driving me around, and just needs to drive herself to and from work, she's not consuming half a tank of gas. So is there a minivan that's more fuel efficient than the PT Cruiser, and can anyone confirm this?
most minivans are six cylinder so you will be forfeiting a little gas mileage for something bigger. Go online and check epa ratings of certain minivans.
I have a 3 yr old son who is in a wheel chair due to a genetic disorder that is new to the medical field. He is the only person known to ever have this disorder, and it manifest several problems. We can not afford the 50,000 for a new handicap van with a wheelchair ramp, but we've heard by word-of-mouth that there are organizations out there that give them away. We do have a minivan currently but i't not able to be converted due to it's age and milage. Where do we turn?
