I had my leg amputated last year and have been in a manual wheelchair since then. (My prosthesis isn't fitting properly and I am having delays in my insurance coverage to change that.) My finances are very limited.
What are some things I need to know about living in a wheelchair that an average person wouldn't know. Any tips on staying healthy and fit?
Any fun ideas to help make it more joyfull? Any practical tips on getting around and taking things from room to room.
How to stay comfortable. I live in it most of the time.
Thanks in advance for your kind support. :)
luvs, :)
I am an amputee (result of traffic accident.) I don't know where you live so it is hard to give advice on what's available. Swimming is your best bet for keeping fit. A table on wheels that has sides (nothing falls off in transit) Keep bandaging your stump, eventually the swelling will go down. If you can eventually walk, forget the pain and realise the gain! I have been upright for 24yrs now. It took three years for my compo to pay for the accident and my prosthesis, if you need more advice email me. I am in Australia! There is a free limb scheme here.

Yes, sell business products on eBay. No shipping, no stock-taking, no subscriptions, no hardwork, no creating products, quick sales, auto-pilot powered, instant delivery, I could go on and on. You just keep 100% of the profits and keep selling...

Physical differences should not even be considered if you love him / her.
The very fact that you asked this question shows that you are not ready for a commitment of this magnitude.
You love someone for what is inside them, not their body!
A pretty face is not what attracts me. It is the mind contained within.
Wingman
This man is getting huge amounts of praise and criticism.
He goes around to business places daily and looks for violations against the disabled. When he sues he either goes to court or gets out of court settlements.
This is how he makes his living http://news.aol.com/article/disabled-man -sues-businesses-for-a/303037
What do you think here?
There are many businesses (mostly smaller, privately owned) whose ability to either hire or accommodate persons with disabilities is greatly impacted by their ability to afford these upgrades or code infractions.
Mr. Wheelchair is making a killing off the ignorance of those business people struggling to stay in business. It sounds more like he has an axe to grind and is using the courts to exact his pound of flesh.
Are his court cases winning anything for disabled persons in general, or is it a case where he is gaining notoriety for his diligence and perseverance?
I don't applaud him for his method per se, but I do understand that disabled persons need a voice.
The Americans with Disabilities Act came about in a similar way, but not as unethically. Check out the movie "Music Within" the story of Richard Pimentel who was became deaf while fighting in Viet Nam, and eventually crafted the Americans with Disabilities Act; training businesses and governments on how to treat disabled persons fairly and with respect.
from what i understand there is a waiting line for HUD disability housing. i have a concept for a housing community for people in wheelchairs, but it would be four people to each house. with private bath, private bedroom and private entrance to the house. but shared kitchen, laundry, general area. everything would be universal design with up to date furnishings. my real question is, how many people in wheelchairs would be willing to live in a shared community setting?
for added details, i am looking at deltec homes for the exterior...
thanks to everyone for contributing, i'm trying to pull this concept together and this is very helpful. so far, privacy is obviously the main consideration, having space to entertain. i think i was at least initially, thinking of people who may be more isolated and in need of community. i live in a more rural area where a lot of people are just stuck a lot of the time. my concept is ultimately for an area that has a small farmers market, restaurant, track /wheelchair trails for exercise, community garden, everything designed with wheels and community in mind. but obviously with the balance of the need for quiet, solitude, peace. added question, can anyone suggest the best place to find people for feedback, survey, initial design critique? i have looked for some blogs but can't seem to find any central hubs. and if part of the concept appeals to you, what else would you want demand to be included for the ideal living arrangement.
many many thanks to everyone.
"community" life is "the thing", whether they be just seniors or in wheelchairs. I know that some community apartments (like several acres types) do have efficiencies or studio apartments but not normally are set up for those in wheelchairs as I think that universal style just came into being not too long ago. There are however people that live in those efficiencies or one bedrooms who are in wheelchairs but they have a caregiver or a neighbor around who could assist them if they needed to get out quickly (plus they are on the first floor and either have two doors or a door and a few windows from which they could leave in an emergency.
Every person has their quirks, ya know, and everyone snores, etc. so I prefer individual efficiencies, and that sounds like what you're talking about. I don't like the "general area" though because there's no privacy to bring friends over.

Patch the guinea pig receives wheel chair « Living Years Pets Blog
PATCH the guinea pig has got a new lease of life – after an engineer built it an ingenious wheelchair.
Family friend Paul Scott stepped in to help after the beloved pet lost the use of its back legs during an unfortunate accident.
Patch’s owner Helena Auty, 6, and her little brother Rowan, 3, were desperate to get their one-year-old guinea pig moving again.
Paul used a few items he had lying around the house and a lot of creativity to design a special wheelchair for the tiny pet.
Mum Becky Auty, said her children were absolutely delighted to have Patch back to her old self.
Mr Scott said he built the wheelchair with a pair of wheels from a child’s wagon, an adult-size skateboard knee pad and some elasticated Velcro.
