You need to contact his local durable medical equipment provider for assistance, or even a local mobility shop can point you in the right direction. Wheelchair lifts and ramps should be installed and repaired by a licensed professional.

Does anyone know where I might find help to get a handicap accessible van for my mother?

My mother is about to turn 52 this year, but she is young at heart. She is my best friend. For seven years she has been in and out of nursing homes due to morbid obesity (which she still struggles with even after having risked her life to get roux-n-y gastric bypass that she was faithfully promised by her physician at the time would be the be-all-end all to her weight problem) and a broken leg that the Dallas, Texas veteran's hospital (where she was being seen at the time because my father is a permanently disabled war veteran and she gets health care because she is his wife) repaired improperly.

We are finally bringing her home, but we either need a van gifted, or even if someone would take a chance on us and let us pay one off, that would be a miracle! We need a heavy-duty full size van with a heavy-duty power wheelchair lift (my mother is 350 lbs before you even take the weight of her power chair into account). Thank you for your help and God bless!

I would suggest that you check with your local United Way office. They can direct you to various local non-profit agencies that might be able to help you.

Repair for sliding door on 2000 Chevrolet Astro?

I own a 2000 Chevy Astro van with an after-market wheelchair lift installed behind the sliding door. The door is *just* wide enough to accommodate the lift.

A few months back, my son didn't open the sliding door far enough. When the ramp came down, it hit the door, and the assembly that holds the door in the track at the top was damaged. I can still close the door, but I have to hold it in a specific position or it slips out of the track (in either direction). Also, the door can no longer be closed from the inside.

I tried to bring it to a body shop, but they refused to touch it because, apparently, there are some challenges as far as repairing such a door and getting it exactly back to "like new" condition.

I'm not so much worried about it being "like new" ... the van is nine years old, after all. I just want the door to stay on track so that the rest of the door assembly doesn't break.

Any idea what is involved in such a repair, and how much it might cost? Also, is there something I might be able to do myself as a short-term repair?

Have you thought about getting the part out of a junkyard and replacing it yourself? That should be a lot cheaper. Also, I would try another body shop. There is nothing unusual about having a van with a damaged door and a decent shop should have fixed dozens.

Do you know how to help?

Ok, a good running van with a wheelchair lift is needed. She cannot afford to buy one. There are no reputable repair shops nor van dealers in this area who will fix a lift for less than a couple hundred and in all likely hood, the lift will have to go back four times before it is fixed good enough to get fifty miles away to get it fixed right. Needless to say, between the van payments and cost of repairs, she cannot afford a van. The greatest problem is that she needs a van for various reasons. Michigan individual is in great need. Do you know of any place that donates to those in need of transportation with wheelchair lifts?

There are places that will help, to install one of those ramps.
