I want to get an academic reference if possible but Google isnt in the mood to help me today! Either that or I am looking in the wrong places! I am trying to make the point in my essay that disabled people are now a visual part of our society - visible in schools, workplaces and in leisure facilities.

Want to Reach a Trillion-Dollar Market? Don't Ignore People With Disabilities
By Daryl C. Hannah October 28, 2008
Is your company missing out on a trillion-dollar market? It is if it ignores people with disabilities. With $1 trillion, including $220 billion in discretionary income, people with disabilities have the most buying power of any traditionally underrepresented group, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau.
Buying power, or disposable income, is the total personal income available after taxes. Total annual buying power in the United States exceeded $10 trillion for the first time in 2007 and is projected to be $13 trillion in 2012. Multicultural markets, which will account for more than a fifth of total buying power this year, account for the lion's share of that growth. And leading the way are people with disabilities.
Here's what you should know about the buying power of people with disabilities:
* More than one in five Americans, approximately 54 million, have a disability, making people with disabilities the largest traditionally underrepresented group in the nation. Sources: U.S. Census Bureau, 2000; The National Organization on Disability/Harris Interactive poll of Americans with Disabilities, 2004
* Thirty percent of the nation's 69.6 million families have at least one member with a disability. Sources: U.S. Census Bureau, 2000; The National Organization on Disability/Harris Interactive poll of Americans with Disabilities, 2004
* Seventy-two percent of people with disabilities are likely to upgrade to a product's latest model. Sources: U.S. Census Bureau, 2000; Witeck-Combs Communications/Harris Interactive poll, 2005; The National Organization on Disability/Harris Interactive poll of Americans with Disabilities, 2004
* Sixty-two percent of people with disabilities say they are likely to do business with companies that have a commitment to diversity and equal treatment of employees. Sources: U.S. Census Bureau, 2000; Witeck-Combs Communications/Harris Interactive poll, 2005; The National Organization on Disability/Harris Interactive poll of Americans with Disabilities, 2004
* Seventy-three percent of people with disabilities are heads of household. Sources: "Within Our Reach: Findings and Recommendations of the National Task Force on Technology and Disability," 2000; Simmons Market Research Bureau, 2000
* People with disabilities spend $13.6 billion on 31.7 million trips each year. Sources: Travel Industry Association of America/Harris Interactive/Open Doors/Society for Accessible Travel and Hospitality Survey, 2002; The National Organization on Disability/Harris Interactive poll of Americans with Disabilities, 2004
* About $3.3 billion is spent annually by travelers with disabilities in the airline industry. Sources: Travel Industry Association of America/Harris Interactive/Open Doors/Society for Accessible Travel and Hospitality Survey, 2002; The National Organization on Disability/Harris Interactive poll of Americans with Disabilities, 2004
* Travelers with disabilities each year spend $4.2 billion in the lodging industry. Sources: Travel Industry Association of America/Harris Interactive/Open Doors/Society for Accessible Travel and Hospitality Survey, 2002; The National Organization on Disability/Harris Interactive poll of Americans with Disabilities, 2004
* A 12 percent increase in revenue in the hospitality industry is attributed, in part, to consumers with disabilities. Sources: Travel Industry Association of America/Harris Interactive/Open Doors/Society for Accessible Travel and Hospitality Survey, 2002; The National Organization on Disability/Harris Interactive poll of Americans with Disabilities, 2004.
* Four out of 10 members of the traveling public are Americans with disabilities and their companions. Sources: Travel Industry Association of America/Harris Interactive/Open Doors/Society for Accessible Travel and Hospitality Survey, 2002; The National Organization on Disability/Harris Interactive poll of Americans with Disabilities, 2004

I'm in a wheelchair and but I still want ot go to new york to work in the fashion industry so is is wheelchair accessible there?
So far everyone has assumed that you meant "are the schools wheelchair accessible" but I have the feeling you mean is NYC itself wheelchair accessible.
First of all, yes, all schools should be wheelchair accessible.
But as to the rest of the City, well, it should be, it's supposed to be, but....you know how it is, sometimes what should be just isn't.
The sidewalks mostly have curb cuts for wheelchairs, but sometimes they are damaged or just not well made. Then, when there is construction there may be detours, and that can have a far greater impact on people in wheelchairs than on people walking. For example, they may extend the sidewalk into the street with a barrier to traffic. It's easy enough to walk into the street into the extended area, but a person in a wheelchair may find it challanging. Or sometimes they close the sidewalk in the middle of the street for construction. People who are walking can cross (illegally) in the middle of the block (and usually do.) But that's far more difficult and dangerous in a wheelchair.
And now to the subways - they are upgrading the subways to put in elevators, but it's not finished, and with the current fiscal crises who knows when it will be finished. Further, the elevators do go out from time to time. One elevator at the Alantic Avenue stop always seems to be out! The buses are now all wheelchair accessible, and that's gotten much better in recent years. And there is also something called "access-a-ride" which is a mass transit system for the disabled, but I'm not sure how it works.
That said, people in wheelchairs do live here and get around the City. It's not easy in some ways, but clearly people do it.
Good luck! If you want this enough, you'll do what you need to do to make your dreams come true!

Are you a quad or para? If you still have use of your arms and hands it will be easier. If not, you can still accomplish much.
I knew a guy, almost 20 years ago, who owned his own video and audio production company just outside of Orlando. He had a diving accident and was left as a partially functioning quad.
Fortunately, he had good people around him and he carried on his business after rehab and was able to do quite well. Lost track of him about 10 years ago, but for the better part of 10 years that I knew of, he came to grips with his condition and overcame most of the obstacles.
Look for other producers to collaborate with. Be sure to network (and keep up your network after graduation). Find out where you excel; writing? directing? producing? pre-pro? post? Wherever you excel, look for other collaborators whose strengths are in areas yours aren't. It's called team building, and I think it will be an important part of the success you achieve.
Your role may be slightly influenced by your mobility - or lack of - but there's a lot of creative and cerebral work to be done in production, in addition to the physical requirements. Apply your creativity and your think power and be consciously aware of the roles you assume, which you like best, which you excel at, and use these observations as tools to craft your place on location.. or in the studio.
Best of luck to you. Just hang tough and follow the dream...
with reference to the 'pessary issue', we are talking about patients that have homehealthcare; are wheelchair bound or bedbound and unable to do the procedure on her own and in addition the patient has 'multiple, 'serious' health issues' that are much more serious than the pessary but gets frequent infections if the the pessary is not changed by a 'trained nurse' as well as 'properly'! We aren't talking about the nurses in the hospitals-- we are talking about the nurses that 'choose' to be in the home health care industry!-- big difference!
To the 'RN' that said she was trained to work in the hospital, tell me why Nurses in the 'e/r' or nurses 'working the floor' cannot 'change' a pessary?
I disagree with this 'RN" because too many women depend on a 'pessary' because they cannot have surgery due to serious nmedical conditions, includung' the 'pessary'!

wow, you are really fired up about pessary devices. There are two types of issues, emergent and non-emergent. This is clearly a non-emergent issues.
I have a suggestion; start The National Pessary Society. It could be a non-profit that would inform people and remind doctors about the benefits of pessary devices. You could have a conference with CEU's. You could have a walk. There is tons of stuff you can do. It seems like the logical next step.
