What can I put in a Gift bag for an elderly woman?

Hi. My mom works at a rehabilation center for the elderly. This summer I am going to try to cheer up some of the elderly people that's family hardly ever visits them. What I'm doing now is making a wheelchair bag for this one lady. What are some things I can put inside to cheer her up even more? Thanks and also can you include some thinks for men...just in case.
Also..try to keep it on the cheap side...im only 12!!

Ask at the admission desk - you can find out what the center furnishes so you don't duplicate.

The center will know of things they need that are not furnished and need to be paid for by them or the allowance. (They generally have a 50 dollar allowance, if they are on Medicare.- which doesn't buy much.

You can always buy artificial flowers - they are better - if they get tipped over, no harm is done.

Each patient has a different capacity and different needs.

The center knows.

Wheelchair users: back pads and backpacks/storage bags?

Two different questions.

Are there any back pads for wheelchairs? Sort of like the cushion for the bottom of the seat, but for the back. Reason I ask is because the back of my wheelchair gives a little (instead of being firm/straight, it bends), I'd imagine most custom manual wheelchairs are like this for comfort reasons but it makes good posture completely impossible because you're leaning back a little 24/7 + I have a minor gut and it looks 1000x worse than it is due to leaning back.

Backpacks/etc: I've seen special "wheelchair bags" that you attach to the back of your wheelchair. But I don't know where to buy those that isn't online (I want to see the bag in person, some things you just can't judge from pictures). Does anyone use regular backpacks? How does that work out for you?
jd: i am truly sorry about your situation (not getting out). i am not too bad off and if i could give you half of my [whatever] i would in a heartbeat.

a small bag will not work for me because i get out ~every other day alone and would like to make the trips more daring (i just get dropped off to the gym, sometimes wheeling myself home). i have been using a plastic bag affixed to the back of my chair to carry my gym stuff lol, but the point is a plastic bag can be ripped right off if someone so chose so more independent trips where things of more value would be brought a plastic bag is insufficient.

i have invacare too but i got just a manual wheelchair, i guess i could have gotten a motorized/non-manual one but im young and those didnt/dont appeal to me for i think obvious reasons. i didnt know there were different backs that can be bought from invacare, i will check those out.

the term "medical devices shop" was key and will help me search for stores like that around my area.

Backpads - I'm assuming you're talking about a manual folding wheelchair? I've never seen any back pads, but I bet someone could make one easily enough out of hardboard and adding something to one edge so it could hang on the back and then put some nice padding on it for comfort. My son uses a motorized wheelchair mostly, and that has a firm back.

Backpacks - My son has the wheelchair bags, but these came from the company that manufactured his various wheelchairs. They are ok, but tend to be flimsy and little more than fabric bags. For serious use, he does use a regular backpack which we toss onto the back of his wheelchair, just looping the straps over each corner. The regular backpack works great.

Hope this helps even though I'm sure that it's somewhat different equipment involved.

I'd recommend going to a medical devices shop and see what they have laying about. There's LOTS of room for improvement in the adaptation equipment field.... I think we have far to go.

Best of luck.

On the show 'Homeland Security' why didn't they arrest that woman?

They caught a woman in a wheelchair smuggling bags and bags of pills from Mexico I think, into the states. Each big bag has lots of little baggies inside with a pill each in them. She had Viagra, and I think Xanex (sp) pills. Police said that the worth on the streets for the pills would have been over $100,000 dollars or more. They said that she was "released" and something about the smuggling of the pills not being a crime. WTH? She was more than likely going to sell the pills on the street and make big money off of them! They said that she could have gotten $5 or more for one Viagra pill! Why wasn't she arrested? The guy on the show caught smuggling bricks of cocaine was arrested. And they said he was going to do big time in prison. What gives?
It looks like you are the ignorant one. The show is REAL and based on REAL cases. So you FAIL.

You were not watching the show very carefully. Catch it in re-runs and try to pay attention this time.

Will a wheelchair be counted as one of my checked bags when flying to Thailand if it's not actually my chair?

I will be traveling to Thailand in February on a wheelchair distribution missions trip. The wheelchairs are all shipped in containers, but I am bringing one with me, a pediatric chair that belonged to my thirteen year old brother who died in September. I'm taking it with me so I can personally meet the child who receives it. My question is, since I'm not actually bringing it as my wheelchair to use, will the wheelchair be counted as one of my allotted two checked bags, or will I be able to check two bags and the wheelchair? I'm bringing a lot of donations so it would be amazing if I could still have two bags, but I don't want to get to the airport and find out its the wheelchair or one of my bags! Thank you!

Of course it will count as one of "your" bags. Does not matter if it is a gift for someone, YOU are the owner now and You are the person bringing it on the plane. You could call the airline and ask how much the extra charge is if you bring 2 bags plus the wheelchair.

How can I carry things while I'm out on my own in my wheelchair?

I am quite new to using a chair, and the one I have has no push handles, but bags designed for wheelchairs seem to hang over push handles.
I can carry small items in a small purse but when I want to get groceries or library books I have been going with a friend to carry for me but this is not something I want to have to do all the time.
Any suggestions?
Thankyou :0)
Thankyou so much for your replies.

I do think that if I didn't have a good friend I would be struggling much more overall.

That underseat bag might be a solution, I'll need to check it out :0). I can't figure out how a basket could fix on
The model of chair I have is a Kuschall K4, and I would be using the bag to carry things from town all the way home as I can't drive a car.

I find the way a lot of assistive equipment is designed to be lacking in style, there should be more fun styles and colours..

Saddle bags sound fun, but may make the chair wider.

The underchair bag sounds the most practical. and I do like the one on adaptable designs :0)
Thankyou for all the replies :0)
I'm sure even the ones which I couldn't do with my style of chair will be useful for other people.

I'm thinking about which will be the best options for me to use depending on what I'm going to be doing.

I just use a backpack. The kind that are designed for people walking. I hang it on the back of my chair so the shoulder straps go over the backrest.

It's kind of hard to describe but the best thing to do would be to transfer onto another chair so you can see all of your wheelchair clearly then hook your backpack onto your chair and adjust the straps so they don't rub on the wheels etc. then you can get back in your wheelchair and practice taking the bag on and off and getting stuff in and out while it's still attached to the chair.

The only consideration with that method is that the bag is behind your centre of gravity so will affect your balance and you'll have to remember that your chair will be more tippy when you've got heavy things in there. It may even fall over backwards when you get out of it if the bag is too heavy.

That method works for me for everyday stuff, diary, purse, keys, bottle of water etc.

For groceries I have a couple of large re-usable bags that keep their square shape well, I can balance 2 on my lap and get to the car. While I'm doing the shopping I put the bags between the backrest and the bar behind it and use a supermarket basket on my lap to collect my stuff.
