I am having a group of people at my home for an upcoming event. One of my guests is in a wheelchair. It makes me take note of my door openings to the bathrooms and entrances/exits. I have some openings that are 27 inches. I dont even know if that is wide enough. I'm sure it is not expected of me to accomodate and it might even not be appropriate. Any advice?
A yard stick. all opening should be three feet wide for wheelchair acccess. However, you don't really need to go sawing out walls. Make sure there are clear and visable 3 foot paths in all the areas of your home, and inform your guest before they arrive that the doorways to the bathrooms are somewhat small. They can make arrangement like bringing a cane or walker - or a friend to assist them should they need it.
This video shows the modifications made during the construction of my home to make it wheelchair accessible.
I`m buying a new home but i`m bound on a wheelchair do to a car accident some times ago, and i would like to know before i sign anything and before i ask them and they will say , NO , u have to pay extra if there is a law that states that they have to make the home accessible for wheelchair access at no extra cost to me compare to the price of the house configuration ?
Any extra modifications you need are payed for by you. They are not required to make homes wheelchair accessible.
My brother in law has very debilitating CP. He lives with his mother who is not well off and the house is not wheelchair friendly AT ALL. His mother has just been picking him up and carrying him room to room for years, but is aging and may not be able to do it much longer. Does anyone know of any programs that may be able to help his family make changes to the house for give both mother a break and son a little freedom?

My wife and I paid our own money to add a wheelchair ramp to a home that we are renting. I'm quite sure that this cost would be deductible if we owned the home, but I'm not clear about our status with this as renters. Is it spelled out clearly someplace?
While its not really relevant to this question, homeowners can only include capital improvements for medical reasons (ie: a wheelchair ramp) in medical expenses to the extent which the cost of the improvement exceeds the increase in home value due to the improvement.
My husband and I are planning on building a home for our family that is comforitable and accessible for our son who has disabilities.I have had no luck finding such websites.
Write to Jerry Lewis and present your problem. They may arrange for an architect at their expense. or Contact the organization which represents the disability your child suffers with,
Good Luck

Jim Weakland was concerned about the condition of the bathroom floor in his friend Jack Scudder's house.
Scudder has cerebral palsy and, for the past couple of years, has spent most of his time in a wheelchair due to a knee injury. The chair would repeatedly get stuck in the grooves and cracks in the yellow vinyl flooring that used to be in his bathroom, Scudder said.
In some areas, the sub flooring was exposed, and in others, Weakland could look right through to the crawl space underneath.
"I was worried that one day I would come in and see Jack's head sticking up out of the floor," Weakland said. "It was in pretty bad shape."
