What are the needs of an elderly person in a wheelchair or walking frame with regards to accommodation?

My grandfather is coming to live with us for a while and i want to make things easy for him! And what can i take into consideration with regards to SAFETY when redesigning my house?

Thank You! (**,)

I have grab bars in the bathroom..toilet and shower..seat in the shower, handicap toilet, but a riser works just as well. Ramp into the house, have a carpenter make about a 4 inch platform for a comfortable chair to sit on, to make it easier for him to get in and out of..I also have a lift chair, but they are to expensive for a short time visit..your doors should be OK..one other thing raise the bed with blocks of wood that are about the same size as a brick..helps immensely..no throw rugs..lucky you to have a grandfather...and lucky him for having you..Enjoy your visit..

Can anyone help me find a used rigid frame wheelchair?

Here is my dilemma, I am a very active disabled person who is well for lack of better words Fricking hard on chairs because I am so active. Now the chair that I have now is falling apart, and of course Medicare will not help me purchase another. Recently the back axcel on my chair has broken, and caused some injuries to my kidney, chest and wrist. Heres the kicker, instead of paying for a new or even fixing the old medicare straight up told me they would rather pay for the Doctor visits (which by the way add up to the cost of 2 new chairs) then help fix or replace the current chair. Being that my wheelchair is falling apart I am unable to work do to the fear of being hurt at work. So I am unable to afford any other insurance. Any advise would be great! Thank You. I do apologize for my horrible spelling I was only able to use one hand.

Medicare is not big on paying for chairs damaged through what they consider heavy use or abuse. You are making a choice to be hard on the chair, so the state is making a choice to not pay for it.

What kind of chair do you use that has a back axle? Most have two axle bolts that can be replaced for about $10 each (http://www.ocelco.com).

In our state, 'heavy users' have two choices- get a doctor's script for a heavier duty chair, or pay for a better chair themselves. I'd go for a chair with a lifetime frame warranty and I don't particularly like rigid frames.

If you are using your chair for sports- shame on you for using the state to pay for your hobby. Wheelchair sports are automatically hard on chairs and one of the most common scams going on now is for users to keep getting the state to pay for chairs damaged in such abusive use.

You can also try to rig up a fund-raiser to cover a new chair. Bars, etc. often help.

How to overcome Occasional "Disinterest mental frame"?

I am aged 63 years, an extrovert, and possess positive outlook to life, and encourage others too. I am confined to a wheelchair due to a disease, but do not get depressed. I am generally in fine spirits. Of late, I tend to get into a mood of "Disinterest mental frame" that does not allow me to do reading, blogging that usually give me satisfaction. I do try to read spiritual books, but FOCUS is absent. How do I overcome this phase?

I notice that you don't allow any emails or any contact from strangers. That alone is not good. I enjoy hearing from nice people who like to talk a little about whatever interests them. But, when communications are one sided; that would block off any contacts with others who may be able to help you. I don't like the ones who find fault and want to blast others about everything they say and do.
Open communicating is fine through yahoo because you don't have to give out your real name or email address. Yahoo Answers is in the middle. A safety net.
It's good that you have a positive outlook to life and you like to help people. And you do not get depressed.
Can you find other areas to branch out into to? Some kind of communicating with the outside world. To see how the rest of the world lives, etc. What's going on in other places? In other peoples minds? Find new ways to express yourself. Find new interests that get you excited and have some reason to look forward to getting up in the mornings. Plan something each day for the next day; that gives you something to be happy about.
I hope you find it.

I need ideas for wheelchair ramp vehicles, other than mini-vans...?

my son is 5 and has a steel frame pediatric wheelchair. he's light enough that I can maneuver him around, but I want a new vehicle that I can add a ramp to.. (im so tired of the mini-van ive been driving for 8 years)... any way a Mom and her kids can look cooL driving an SUV... AND it be functional enough to transport my son??

I have considered getting a Ford Edge it can be ramp equiped. The new Taurus X can also be ramp equiped. I have a Ford Focus and my son gets my scooter into the back of it with the assistance of a Braun lift.

    I earned that title tonight.

My theory:  near misses and nonfatal mistakes are among the greatest blessings.  When you do something harmfully dumb, yet no harm comes of it, it’s a priceless wake-up call.  You have a much better kind of guardian angel than one that never lets you fuck up.  For one thing, you won’t make particular mistake again for at least five years, so strike one dumb thing from the list of menaces you pose to yourself and others.  More generally, and even more valuably, you will not trust yourself to be in a trance again for some time to come (much less than five years, though, I’m afraid).

    Here’s what I did.

Got J dressed, up, into the van, and drove to the dojo.  Early class today, it’s Saturday.  It was still light.  We were just a little late.  Our friend the karate teacher was expecting us and sent two green belts out to help us get out of the van.
