writing a story about a character who is blind and have polio......can any one suggest what would be realistic for him to nevigate? a wheelchair or crutches?
Wheelchair definitely.
A person using crutches cannot also use a cane. So they would very likely find themself with one of their crutches stuck in something they did not see - such as a crack in the sidewalk. They would also not be able to check for over head barriers and would likely bump their head at some point. They would also be off a curb and fallen into the street prior t realizing there was a curb.
A wheelchair can be fitted with an apparatus that is able to stop a chair if it senses that there is nothing ahead. Example - you are traveling along a sidewalk and there is a curb into the street. The thing attached to the front of the chair can feel that there is no street at the same level and stops the chair from moving forward.
If a person is right handed - and chair can be set with its controls on the left, so that they can use a cane with their right hand. They could also use puff or head controls so that they didn't need either hand to operate it.
Most people I know who are blind and are chair users also have a service dog. The service dog is able to indicate to its owner when there are barriers they need to know about ahead or above.
A short demonstration of the swing through gait that is typically the most efficient way of walking in my braces and crutches.
Okay My knee cap poped out and and it is back in and I am in 7th grade so my classes are all over the place, and I can't reinjure it because I have track and softball that I am pretisipating in.Would my knee most likly heal best with a can wheelchair or crutches or should I try to walk it off???
I reinjured my knee so I am kinda worried
1) If you are kind of worried, consider seeing a doctor.
2) If you don't want to see a medical professional, and if "walking it off" seems a reasonable option to you, it probably isn't hurt badly. If you are concerned about it popping out again, get a knee brace with a patella (kneecap) hole to keep it in place.

Well, about 3, almost 4, weeks ago I broke my femur pretty badly. ANd now I have this huge metal thing attached to six pins that are drilled into my bone. With this, I cannot bend my knee or really do anything normally. At school I have to be in a wheelchair (which I was nervous about the reception of that, but it turned out okay). But I cant really walk without crutches. And I cant run either. I cant get any exercise. Im a pretty big thirteen year old (180 lbs, 6'0") and I have lost a bit of weight since staying in the hospital for so long. But if I keep eating and not exercising, Im woried I'll end up really big. I dont know what to do!
If you want to start to lose weight you have to increase the amount of physical activity. For example you can walk a little more with your crutches, you can propel your wheelchair (it´s a great work for your upper body), you can exercise your arms and your other leg. Always do it carefully, and remember there shouldn´t be any pain
Best of luck
If a person is an arm amputee, and injures (or loses) a leg to where they cannot walk unassisted, how do they use crutches or a wheelchair?
Gets the type of crutch that has the arm brace on it or use a motorized wheelchair with controls on side where arm was.
I'm getting it done in 10 days. And I just wanted to know If I would have to use crutches or something because idk I was thinking it was keep my back straight and prevent me from limping which would probably put even more pressure on the wounds
No, you're so lucky. It used to be major surgery, and now it's less trouble than wisdom tooth extraction. It's a tiny incision, few stitches, and a fast recuperation. It's just amazing the strides they have made in some surgical procedures, and this is one of them. You will be able to walk with little to no pain, and be back to full mobility in about 2 to 3 weeks. (If you're limping, it will be minimal, and the wound is so small, it won't matter. You will heal so quickly.) Next month at this time, you won't even feel like you had it done - except no more gall bladder pain :-)

DISABLED : What’s that
Main Entry: disabled Part of Speech: adjective Definition: incapacitated
Synonyms:
broken-down, confined, decrepit, disarmed, hamstrung, handicapped, helpless, hurt, incapable, infirm, laid-up, lame, maimed, out-of-action, out-of-commission, paralysed, powerless, run-down, sidelined, stalled, weakened, worn-out, wounded, wrecked
What is disabled?
I am sure there are thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people around the world who are in the same boat when it comes to disability. There are some who cannot be seen to be disabled, like hearing impaired or people with internal disabilities, like heart, kidney, liver or other organ malfunction. Mental disabilities and so many other kinds of disabilities, that it would be a mammoth task to name them all or to list them all here. Suffice to say that there are some disabilities that are not visibly obvious.
