My son's High School wants to kick him out because he missed so much school. We just returned from Mayo Clinic. My son was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. He has chronic fatigue and can only go to school 1hour a day. But the school won't cooperate!!! What can we do??? He is willing to go to school 1 hour a day, and do the rest of the homework at home, but they won't let him. HELP!
He is capable of walking to and from class, he doesn't need a wheelchair or anything. Just the fatigue, the Dr specified only 1 hour a day to start, work his way to full-time in about 1 year's time. School won't cooperate at all. Is my son being discriminated against because he is ill?
If you have reports stating your child has this diagnosis (and the treatment plan clearly states one hour per day) it shoulds like he has a medical need that impacts his academic success. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA), he might be regarded as having an Other Health Impariment (OHI). This would get him an Individual Education Plan (IEP) that might be written to include home instruction so he can get his subjects.
It seems like that might be the route to go. The American with Disabilities Act has a provision called Section 504 for medical needs. A plan under this act might also work to make accommodations, but it seems like your son has more severe needs, thus an IEP might better serve him. In any case, a team (that includes you!) nmust meet to decide what services your child needs.
To start, I suggest scheduling a meeting with the school psychologist to get the ball rolling (NOT the school counselor, by the way- these are two very different positions). Sometimes, the school psych is the only one in the building who understands the ins and outs of special education law, especially in a high school. Teachers at that level don't often have much experience with identification of special needs children. The school nurse can also advocate for you in the building (they need to be alerted to write a medical plan anyway). Be sure to take your medical paperwork with you to any meetings scheduled, as well as your child's grades (you have to prove your child's education is adversely affected). There should be an evaluation of some sort completed, and then a team will meet to determine the severity of the impact on education. If your child qualifies for services, then an IEP will be written. Many districts provide home instruction to students who are unable to stay in school the entire day. Finally, be careful with lawyers, they can sometimes bring an air of hostility with them that often impedes the process.
As an aside, one reason why your school may not let your son have miss school without an IEP or 504 plan is because of No Child Left Behind. Did you know schools have to maintain 93% attendance for all students? I've seen schools labeled as failing because of one kid with poor attendance. Someone mentioned test scores- kids with IEP's often do better because they get accommodations- more time, etc. (which it sounds like your son would definitely need). If someone at school forgets, remind them of these things and I'm sure they want to do all they can to be sure he's successful.
Trying out my first Wheelchair...
How should I tell them I'm disabled and that I use a wheelchair? PLEASE NO RUDE COMMENTS I'VE NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE.
I'm also disabled, but you can still volunteer at a clinic. I would tell them straight forward but also tell them that I am cable of doing the job. You still have the right to volunteer so they should let you work and it shouldn't matter because they always want someone to volunteer because they don't have to pay for you.
I'm desperately searching for a low cost spay/neuter clinic for a stray female cat I found that is marking my furniture by urinating when in heat. I also need to get my male dog fixed as well. we are on a fixed income because of my husbands disability which has left him in a wheelchair. We love our animals and just need to be able to find something affordable in the Oshawa/Durham region area in Ontario...now considered part of the GTA but as close to Oshawa as possible please. I did hear of something coming soon to GTA. they still have some money to raise...40,000. I just can't wait with this cat marking all over my furniture. I won't have any left if this keeps up.
Call around to local animal rescues many offer or know about low cost clinics. Also try talking to local vets about sponsoring one if none are available
Went to pain clinic to get injections for pain. The elevator doors wouldn't give us time to get in. The doctor tried to fix my leg and couldn't. Gotta laugh, it did look funny
it happens all the time

A friend of mine is housebound with a disability, and has no money to spare. His dog collapsed and now can't use his hind legs, and is lethargic. I'd like to know if there's some kind of lower cost or sliding-fee place I could take the dog for care? (My own vet charges an arm and a leg...so there's no way I could take the dog there.) This guy really loves his dog, and since he's housebound & wheelchair bound, the dog means the whole world to him! Can anyone help?
If the dog cannot use the hind legs and the owner is disabled, he will not be able to keep up with the nursing care of the dog, even if it can recover from this. In addition, most "low cost" clinics cut corners and do not provide good care. I have to clean up after their messes on a daily basis, practicing emergency medicine.

Eve of discovery: wheelchair clinic and AFOs
I forgot to mention that last week Eve had appointments for a wheelchair clinic and to get fitted for new AFOs (ankle foot orthotics). She is still incredibly fearful of medical settings. The wheelchair clinic was not too bad, though she did freak out when they measured her for the chair. We're ordering a Zippy Iris with lots of accessories (tray, stroller handlebar, etc.). It's a really nice chair with lots of room for growth. With a click it will tilt back while she's in it so that it can relieve pressure on her rear and generally be more comfortable for her. It will take a while to get through insurance. The DME rep said that maybe in January we'd get the new chair. The positioning chair that...
