Suggestions for cleaning wheelchair upholstery?

Needing to know of any techniques or chemicals to help clean a chair made with polyurethane foam padding encased in porus vinyl like material. It is black colored, so I hesitate to use bleach. Thus far, I've used a car wash with pre-treating the spots on the chair scrubbing with dial bar soap using Spray N Wash as a lubricant. It cleaned well, but odor still was present, although lessened. I need some ideas of what works for you; chemicals that will not create allergies to the wheelchair user (lives in chair 24/7) and does not ruin fabric. Thank you for your help !

You might try some greased lightening and rinse and dry well, then you can get a product called OUT in the pet section of Walmart to eliminate odors, it has a pleasant smell and works on a enzyme. You might also want to check in to a rubber sheet for the seat of the wheel chair and cover with a soft blanket that can be washed.

Wheelchair cleaning help?

I am a wheelchair user and tend to get the wheels pretty dirty through daily use. My wife works tirelessly to clean up after the dirt that I track into the house but it is starting to get to be too much. Does anybody know of any easy way to clean the wheels of a wheelchair? Is there any kind of device that I could buy that would help me with this?

I found a great way to clean my hubby's wheelchair - the help-yourself car wash!
I take along tough scrub brushes (like for cleaning grout in bathroom), scissors for cutting threads or hair caught in wheel, screw driver for loosening parts & tightening back up again, towels, anti-bacterial or soap with bleach (as for doing dishes), and plenty of quarters!

It's always good to have a second wheelchair, so that the first one can dry while the other one is being used.

PS - I would suggest now to have a wheelchair for travel outdoors, and one for ONLY using indoors. This will help with the tracking of dirt that destroys carpets. There are inexpensive "light duty" wheelchairs at some drugstores like Walgreen's, CVS, and Sam's Warehouse that are about half the cost of a standard wheelchair that you can use in the interim while the primary wheelchair is being cleaned.

Good luck! Feel free to email me if you have any further questions!

Can I wear gloves If I'm transporting a contact patient via wheelchair or stretcher in a hospital?

Such as when taking a patient back to their room after an x-ray? We are being told that we can not wear clean gloves to push a wheelchair or stretcher, even if the patient is considered contact. Where can I find evidence that supports your answer? I am aware of HIPPA, but it shouldn't matter if gloves are worn with every patient.

Maybe you can find an answer on JCAHO's website, or report a complaint: http://www.jointcommission.org/

Can I get some house cleaning tips please?

I would appreciate any and all tips that I can get for house cleaning...*BUT* with one little twist. I am in a wheelchair. Can anybody help now?

First of all I would like to mention that you can get an aide in to help a few times a week or more. Ask your doctor. I have had help in the past due to my disabilities.
I suggest you get a reacher too. It is a long bar that you can pick things up with if they are out of reach.
For cleaning the tub, get a new broom and use that. Put your cleaning stuff in the tub, wet the broom and scrub away.
For making the bed, Get sheets with snaps at the end so this way they do not come undone at the foot. Makes the bed making alot easier. You may want to just pin or sew the corners to do so.
Dishes are a pain so I suggest you get a chair that is high enough to reach the sink if this is feasable.
Get a very lightweight vacuum to use.
For dusting get one of those long wand dusters and an extension. I had to buy a window washer with a long extension but luckily it was the same fitting and attached well to the duster.
Get a cart (the kind with two wheels) and put all your cleaning items in there. Makes it a lot handier to have them all together and can take the cleaning cart out when needed.
This site has an article to make it easier for the arthretic too but I think you may find some good ideas on there.
http://www.hopkinshospital.org/health_in fo/Arthritis/reading/RA_household.html This site has a bunch of resources as well that may help with getting the job done.
http://www.eskimo.com/~jlubin/disabled/a ll.htm
I have included a site for people with arthristis as it has a lot of useful things on it that may help you from the reacher to jar opening items and other stuff. I have been searching for ideas on the internet for you but so far have turned up nothing specifically for making your job easier but I know it has to be out there somewhere. If I find one I will add more to this. I hope some of this will help you.
Be sure to do one room at a time as this will be far less overwhelming. Feel free to take breaks and do not let the small stuff get to you.
