When I booked the private hire car for my mum I was assured there was a way to clamp the wheelchair down and a seat belt for her. When the time came the taxi picked her up got her and the wheelchair in the car but did not clamp it down or offer a seat belt, causing her to feel very unsafe. Is it against the law in the UK to carry a disabled passenger in her wheelchair without clamping it down and offering a seat belt if it was fitted in the car?
By law and its not just your local council, its e.u. but your local council has to enforce the law. When a wheel chair is placed into a wheelchair friendly or private hire, which incidentally have stricter rules now as new legislation is in. They must be clamped to the floor to stop movement and a safety belt put across the passenger. If the job isnt done right report it, you wont be named. They don't reduce the cost when things go wrong. You must be more daring, You can approach a cabbie and say Im worried about my Mum not being secured. what happens (god forbid) in an accident. Don't think the office would know. Cabbies have to be squeaky clean now and if they dont do there job they are hauled over the coals.

I will be visiting the LA area with a student group and need to hire a wheelchair accessible car service to drive me around the major studios and entertainment companies in the area. We have a packed schedule and will be going on 3 visits per day so reliability is of the essence. Which LA transportation companies offer good service and have wheelchair accessible vans (the chair does not fold)?
I am looking for private transportation only *please do not reply with paratransit or MTA info*

I need this type of car as one of my children is in a wheelchair and they have lots of space in the back
I think choosing the bigger boys (Avis and Hertz) and checking their websites, then booking that vehicle specifically.
Avis list of cars:
http://www.avis.com/car-rental/content/c arGuide.ac?navId=T4M01S00&country=PT
has a Seat Altea XL 1.4 Wagon
the Seat Alhambra 1.9, maybe a bit big ?
https://www.hertz.com/rentacar/byr/index.jsp?targetPage=locationView.jsp&eoag=LIST50&locType=pUp
you have to look at each car type in turn.
but do Opel Astra 1.4 Wagon (or Similar)
also Seat Alhambra 1.9
Daihatsu Terios 1.3 or Similar
But an interesting challenge..
I would call the UK branches of the big companies..
as the ranges change all the time.
what ever you choose, in portugal, a smaller car is going to be better on their roads than a bigger one.. what ever your needs
.
Hi I need help for booking the type of vehicle I need for our family trip to Florida in Oct of next year. The problem I am having is size, the car hire sites don’t go into that much, you see we will be a family of 7 including a baby, luggage, but now for the big problem an electric wheelchair. I was thinking on the lines of a mini bus, say 12 seats using the extra seats for the luggage, but I’m unable to find out how much room there is for the wheelchair, most are telling me luggage space is limited. So I’m hoping one of you good people out there will be able to advise.
Thank you for any help, or advice given
Thanks to both so far, No Mary I have rented a villa, i love disney, but find more freedom with a villa.
I will try the web site, and your right about Sandford, not sure which airport yet it may depend on the car hire
You are on the right lines with booking a vehicle with more seats, as there is never enough room for luggage in ANY American vehicle as their boots (trunks) are much smaller. Using the seats for luggage is excellent, but if you need to leave it unattended on the way back then clearly it will all be in view. I'm sure you will be able to slide a folded wheelchair between the seats, but as to putting an open one in, I think you would be lucky.
Most flights back from Orlando tend to leave early evening so you have the day to kill - you might wnat to look at seeing if your Airline will allow you to check in early.
Look at www.travelcitydirect.com - used them 3 times now and can't fault them. Also, consider flying into Sanford rather then Orlando International, it's SOOO much less stress!
Also look at car hire separately with someone like www.carhire3000.com? If you phone them, they have been very helpful for me in the past and might be able to give you more reassurance.
I need to get from Stanstead airport to Sidcup (Kent) on oct 27th and for a open day at a university. I'm stuck on how to do it because the tube is not possible with the wheelchair ( not the route i need anyway) and i'm under 23 so cant hire a car and my family are away so cant help. Does anyone have any other ideas on how i could do it?
I'm going to look at Rose Bruford College
You can get a national express coach from stansted to stratford in East London for £6, you may need to make special arrangements with them first but stratford is a wheelchair accessible station, Get the Docklands right railway to Lewisham, once you get off there will be 2 exits 1 with stairs and the other a long ramp to a large roundabout, turn 180 degrees and go to the train station, once you go in turn left and the platform there runs trains to sidcup every 15 mins or so, i'm not sure if Sidcups wheelchair accessible as i've only gone as far as Mottingham but i'm sure if you google it you can find south-east trains' number and give them a call
