Can a drunk handicapped person, who is operating an electric wheelchair, be charged with a DUI?

I know you can get a dui on a bike or skate board, I am just curious. I just happened to see a drunk person opperating an electric wheelchair today. He was all over the place, in the bushes, in the street. I asked him if he wanted help but he said no in a drunken slur. He said his apartment complex was two miles from the bar and he would make it home in his wheelchair. Then he ran in to the curb. I got him up and going again, but he was really weaving.

yes

Full speed with a wheelchair hand bike

Full speed ahead on the street, dirt road, the terrain and the stairs, then disconnect the bike from a wheelchair.

If people have to wear a helmet while ridding a bike what is the difference with ridding a wheelchair?

They never have to wear helmets that would suck if they do but what is up with that?

Balance, speed, riding with traffic. You normally don't have these issues with wheelchairs. But there are probably a few people that should wear helmets while in wheelchairs.

How can a wheelchair-bound college student travel Asia with her American friend? Ideas?

Hi! I am a 20-year-old from Asia who has not known the limitlessness of life until I met Tif, an outdoor American girl who brought me on bike rides and donkey rides. I have never travelled without my parents but would like to do so within the next year. Any suggestions?

Several issues include: wheelchair accessibility, accessible bathroom, backpacking tools, light-weight mobility equipments, options for transportation, cost? We have considered Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, China, and the Philippines... but we don't know if it is too difficult for us.

Also, what can we do to get sponsors and people to help? We're thinking of putting together an inspirational program and both of us can speak to inspire the local people. Please suggest!!!

I am an American male in good health and I find getting around in most Asian cities a real challenge, Not only do they not have handicapped accessible public bath rooms. they do not even have bath rooms.
There are very few places that you will find a sidewalk in the sense that we think of a sidewalk. If it is a sidewalk, there are vendors set up on it and people driving trucks on it.
The major cities of China do not fit this pattern. You can get around Beijing, Shenyang, Shenzhen very well. But public transport is not accessible. Forget about trying Bangkok or Manila.
But if you have enough grit , you can do anything. It really depends on your mind set.
Try it and love the adventure !

Is it unsafe to put wheelchair tires on a bicycle?

My son's vintage Bianchi bike takes 24 inch (24 x 1 1/4) tires and, as far as I can tell, that size is no longer in production. I'm thinking of trying a pair of wheelchair tires (Primo 24 x 1 3/8). How bad of an idea is this? Thanks! Gordon

Width Considerations
Although you can use practically any tire/rim combination that shares the same bead seat diameter, it is unwise to use widely disparate sizes.
If you use a very narrow tire on a wide rim, you risk pinch flats and rim damage from road hazards.

If you use a very wide tire on a narrow rim, you risk sidewall or rim failure. This combination causes very sloppy handling at low speeds. Unfortunately, current mountain-bike fashion pushes the edge of this. In the interest of weight saving, most current mountain bikes have excessively narrow rims. Such narrow rims work very poorly with wide tires, unless the tires are overinflated...but that defeats the purpose of wide tires, and puts undue stress on the rim sidewalls.

The tire you mentioned should be OK.There is a graph on this page that explains why.
Yoy might want to try 26" wheels and a new set of brakes.

Wheelchair? Anyone ever try to make one?

I think i might try to make a wheelchair out of bike tires somehow has anyone ever tried it that can give me hints or tips, or know where i can get one cheap or free?

There have been various charitable grops that have manufactured wheelchairs from bicycle parts over the years here is just one.

If you drop them an email they could probably send you a design.

If your trying to get one cheap try your local charities and deceased estates.

  • GUEST EDITORIAL: Why Burien Should Approve The Transportation ...

    By Joe Fitzgibbon

The residents of Burien will have the opportunity this November to vote YES for investments in bicycle and pedestrian facilities. For the price of a half tank of gas, we can make our city safer for our kids and families walking and biking.

As The B-Town Blog has previously reported , a YES vote on the Transportation Benefit District and the proposed $25 vehicle license fee will enable the City of Burien build bicycle lanes, provide safer connections to schools, and repair inadequate sidewalks to increase the mobility of our seniors. I hope you will join me in voting YES to approve this levy to make our city safer for pedestrians and bicyclists.
