My son's vintage Bianchi bike takes 24 inch (24 x 1 1/4) tires and, as far as I can tell, that size is no longer in production. I'm thinking of trying a pair of wheelchair tires (Primo 24 x 1 3/8). How bad of an idea is this? Thanks! Gordon

Width Considerations
Although you can use practically any tire/rim combination that shares the same bead seat diameter, it is unwise to use widely disparate sizes.
If you use a very narrow tire on a wide rim, you risk pinch flats and rim damage from road hazards.
If you use a very wide tire on a narrow rim, you risk sidewall or rim failure. This combination causes very sloppy handling at low speeds. Unfortunately, current mountain-bike fashion pushes the edge of this. In the interest of weight saving, most current mountain bikes have excessively narrow rims. Such narrow rims work very poorly with wide tires, unless the tires are overinflated...but that defeats the purpose of wide tires, and puts undue stress on the rim sidewalls.
The tire you mentioned should be OK.There is a graph on this page that explains why.
Yoy might want to try 26" wheels and a new set of brakes.

My wheels on my wheelchair only have 24 by 1 3/8 tires.
All the wheelchair tires online are expensive compared to bicycle tires.
Can you put wide tires on wheels like mine that have 24 by 1 3/8 or do I have to buy new wheelchair wheels.
Which are by the way too expensive for me to purchase.
I want to put 2 inch wide tires on my wheelchair if its possible.
Also, how do I know what tire will fit by the numbers.
I don't understand the numbers, they are confusing.
here are some $6.50 replacement tires

bike tire numbering is impossible to figure out

it looks like there is no 2" wide tire that would fit the rim diameter, 540mm
so you can;t even try it
540 m: 24 x 1 1/8, 24 x 1 3/8 (E.5), 600 A
unless you can find something wide in the "600A" size
the current wheels would probably be fine with 2" tires but you won;t find them most likely

I keep reading about cardio exercises and how that'll help get a flat stomach. But those don't seem to apply to people with wheelchairs. I can't get on a treadmill or a bicycle and I can't "step up." I am paralyzed from the waist down completely. What do I do instead?
1. People in wheelchairs need a slightly different diet. It is really easy to pack on more calories than you need if you eat 'normal' diets. A dietician or nutritionist with experience in this area can help.
2. Any exercise is better than nothing. Pushups, small barbells, chin ups, swimming, pushing the chair uphill, etc. Look for the harder way to do things. Get your heartrate up for several minutes in a row several times a week- the more the better.
For some interesting workout ideas, search for 'Kettleballs", "Shovelglove", and so on. Each of these will probably take you to other helpful links- like the water tube and more. You can also make a great home gym from bungee cord and other stuff laying around.
3. 'Flat stomachs' are partially a scam. The stomach of a healthy, fit, normal person is generally not flat, but we have become convinced that the stomachs of fitness models is the 'norm', when it is really a little bit of a freak of genetics. A '6 pack' is even less likely for most of us- we just don't have the genes.

ok, i got an idea to put a skillsaw motor on a bicycle and use lithium batteries off an electric wheelchair. you guys think it'll work?? any advice or cautions??
You can simply buy an electric bicycle conversion kit, which is basically just an electric motor you attach to your bicycle. There are many available, and they've been specifically designed for that purpose. Splicing something together might be a fun project, but no doubt it wouldn't work nearly as well.
A person in a powered wheelchair is a pedestrian, per California Motor Vehicle Code. He had no more business in a turning lane than a pedestrian.
Bicycles are not only ALLOWED, they are REQUIRED to use the turning lanes, just like a motor vehicle, unless the rider chooses to get off the bike and walk across the street, AS a pedestrian.
