The NWBA crowned So. Illinois University it's first Intercollegiate Champion at the first Intercollegiate Tournament in 1977 which was held at the University of Illinois. Five different schools-S.W. State, Wright State (Oh.)-The University of Texas at Arlington-The University of Illinois and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, have since claimed the title of 'Champion.' By 1999 CIC development required the member institutions to re-organize as the NWBA Central Intercollegiate Division (CID) giving the Division more autonomy within the NWBA.

    YAKIMA--1B state high school basketball wasn't the only tournament in Yakima this weekend.

    For the third year, Franklin Middle School hosted a wheelchair basketball tournament.

    Eight teams made up of players ranging in age from five to 50 hooped it up Saturday and Sunday.  They're part of teams from Seattle, Tacoma, Portland and Spokane.

    "I love hanging out with my teammates, having a good time and being competitive as much as I can," Nick Weiss, who's been playing wheelchair basketball for about eight years, said.  "It's a blast."

    Weiss is a senior in high school.  He's earned a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Illinois.
