Why are the skaters and wheelchair athlete faster than the normal running athletes?

The human body is relatively energy efficient, approaching an energy efficiency of 30% (Cf internal combustion engine 15 -20%).
Consider the following: The men’s London marathon winner usually sets a time of just over 2 hours whilst the wheelchair winner takes around 1 hour 35 minutes.
The 10,000 metres track event at the Olympics was won in around 26 minutes, the 10,000 metres speed skating event at the winter games was won in around 12 minutes.

when you are running on legs you are required to shift your weight around, lift up a leg, press down with another, back and forth, while in a wheel chair you just have to push down on the front of the wheel to make it spin. the movement is done by the wheels, not the limbs.

How to become a wheelchair athlete?

How does one get started in wheelchair sports? I've been disabled for 11 years and I'm sick of being lazy. I would love to try to train for maybe something like a 5K or smaller? I have no clue where to start. Any ideas? (I'm in the DC area). Thanks!

well get yourself into rehab and let them do an evaluation then go to a medical supply stores and get yourself a custom running wheelchair which are a three large wheels with two besides you and one out front or a sport chair which has a steeper wheel angles which stick out more and then you get out there to local races join clubs if you use a wheelchair or not you can still compete that is what the ada is here for you to help you compete with the amplatory oh and have fun and try not to break a leg

In what sport would a amputees competed against some in a wheelchair and other athlete with Cerebral Palsy?

Amputees compete in wheelchair basketball and volleyball, and swimming. They also compete in track events with prosthetics... There are probably more, but that's what I know off the top of my head. You can compete in practically anything as an amputee, in a wheelchair or with CP.

I have studied the media for almost 20 years and this blog is about my research interest: the media and disability. The media have real power to define what the public knows about disability and that's what I investigate. I am also a writer and media watcher. In addition, I want to use this blog to create a database of media stories on disability topics from around the world.
