Wheelchair Accessible Van

I am a 53 year old widow who due to spinal cord surgery can no longer work i have trouble getting around and have to rely on others when I do go out I can't use my electric wheel chair it doesn't fit in friends cars so i am very limited but grateful to them i cannot afford a new van and can no longer work oes anyone have a van they don't need that runs and is wheelchair accessible? Thank you

call ur local salvation army and churches and ask.....also cud call local nursing homes
as well as ur local car dealers both new and used dealerships get trad-ins and might can give u for free as a tax write off....good luck

I'm in need of renting a wheelchair accessible van or minivan for my grandfather for one day (for my wedding this Saturday) and due to the time constraints am looking for an option that is close by for pickup and drop-off. I'm located in Hacienda Heights (91745), CA. I know about the options located around LAX and Santa Ana.

Does anyone know any closer options? Anything that would get the job done! Thanks!

I am handicapped myself, and unfortunately the closest accessible van rental is probably the agency in Santa Ana. As stated, the market for this type of vehicle is extremely limited.

Is there a dial-a-ride type of service in your area that could possible offer any help, or perhaps a medical transportation service. I see lots of these vehicles when I go to my many doctor visits. I believe there is a taxi company in Downey (Fiesta Cab) that has an accessible vehicle, but that might be too expensive.

Which makes can have this? Sienna?Odyssey?Dodge Caravans?

What year would the price range match. What would be a rip off?

krazybob, there are cab vans that have the manual wheelchair ramp, would be cheaper than a lift... there is headroom.. but most likely not on all vans

You will need a full sized half ton or heavier van - the the compact minivans will not have enough headroom to get a person in a wheel chair in and out of the van while they are in the wheel chair. Most will have a power lift, not a ramp because of the hazards of getting someone in or out when it is raining or snowing.

I need help in paying for a handicap accessible van for our son. I would appreciate help finding sources such as grants to help us pay for the van.

The link below is a list of organizations that give grants to handicapped applicants - many may not grant to an individual.

My Dad came across an excellent deal for his van with a lift - a car dealer had gotten a fully equipped van in as a trade in when family members of a recently deceased person had no use for the vehicle.

The dealer was lamenting the cost of restoring the van to its original condition. A friend of my Dad's heard about this and told my Dad to contact the car dealership.

It's a long shot - but check every car dealership in your area to see if any of them has gotten a trade-in.

There is also what looks like a handicap van clearinghouse with an 800 number - 800 775 VANS.

Another possibility would be to check in senior housing and in Veterans organizations for individuals who may no longer need their vehicles.

My 96-year-old teacher took herself off the road at age 90 - and had a perfectly good vehicle to pass along.
