Moving to Costa Rica in a Wheelchair?

I am confined to a power wheelchair and need to find out what handicap services are available. ( ie: How much would it cost to hire home care helpers?, Is there affordable housing?, Is there wheelchair accessible public transportation?)
I would also like to find some who is disabled who could be a contact for me.

you will encounter architechtural barriers, lack of wheelchair accessibiliy. You will be able to hire locals to assist in your home without difficulty, and will find that help very reasonably priced. Housing is affordable, but access with a power wheelchair may be difficult. Good luck on your adventure!

I noticed you posted in the Costa Rica section and though I'd give a pointer. Most Latin American and Caribbean countries are very humid and very hot, both of which can degrade a motorized wheelchair. You may wish to contact your manufacturer first to see what countries they can provide support in to narrow your search. Or find which countries have a model compatible to your needs. Once you get your basic needs met, then look at the rest but be prepared for the fact that most countries are not handicapped accessible.

are places in paris wheelchair accessible?
grt2205

i wanted to take my sister to paris for her birthday. she is in a wheelchair, so i wanted to know if it would be hard for her to get around paris? what about transportation? public facilities?

Wheelchair accessibility can be an issue.

Many public places are simply not accessible and even places which state they are do not comport with American standards. Hotels, especially budget hotels, are rarely able to accommodate wheelchair users.

Much of tourist Paris is very ancient and making places accessible can be a daunting or even impossible task. Nonetheless the attempt is being made. The Louvre is accessible, the Eiffel Tower;s first two levels are accessible, The Musee D'orsay and the Centre Pompidou are almost completely accessible.

Not all stations on the Metro are accessible nor are some buses. Information on which stations are accessible is here: http://www.infomobi.com/

Several organizations provide accessible van transportation upon advance reservation. GIHP (Groupement pour L’Insertion des Handicapes Physiques) is funded by the government ( http://www.gihpidf.asso.fr/ ) ATPAP (Association pour le Transport de Porte a Porte) is a for-profit service ( Phone/Fax 1-45-60-01-96).
