I sound a little crazy... but I've been on crutches for the past three weeks because of something that nobody knows that I've done... in other words, I did something bad to my knee, but nobody knows what.
Being on crutches and in a wheelchair has pretty much touched my life... and I'm in middle school so I've handled the teasing and stuff... that really upsets me but I hate to see other kids go through it too. So I want to somehow create a school/rehab center where kids of all ages could go to school with other disabled students, either permanently or just for a while. The school would be crutches/wheelchair accessible. No stairs, or low tables, desks, whatever. But also in the school there would be physical therapy/rehab for the kids who needed it. So they could go and get their therapy with school, so everything is convenient. There would also be accessible lunch for the kids, because with me, I can't carry my lunch, or pretty much anything.
I would build a gym that kids could use if they wanted to, like a phys.ed class for us normal kids. There would be a band, art classes, just like a normal school. It would have counselors, secretaries, a student council, everything. Just so the kids would feel normal. There would be no teasing, because the children are among other kids just like them.
I was thinking I could accept donations for this. Do you think my idea is crazy?
i like your point, but i feel more singled out in an area, like a normal school, where other people don't have crutches and wheelchairs
if i was in my "dream school" i would feel normal and welcomed
your sweet but just because they are disabled doesnt mean they should be singled out. people who are perminately disabled want to be normal just like everyone else.. segregating them to their own 'special school' is a really horrible idea .. im sorry bout ur teasing but its just a part of life. it will only make u stronger.
Vets at VA Med Center in St. Louis enjoy their new wheelchair accessible pool table from AE Schmidt Billiards.
This happened Friday 20th of February
Went out for a family dinner to a Japanese restaurant that had the seating on the floor but under the table was a "foot well" for your feet so it was like you are sitting in a regular chair. This particular room is handicap accessible so at the end of the table where it would normally just be flooring, the foot well was extended out to a door to allow a wheelchair to pull in and up to the table. This access leaves a 4 ft. wide gap that is 3 ft. deep, like a large step off into the well.
As the hostess was seating us, my mom was letting her know that we had already ordered drinks and looking at her talking, as I walked first over the gap not stepping in it but taking a long stride(I am 6'2), but it being my moms first time in the restaurant, she had no idea about the gap and the hostess said nothing. My mom took a step into the well and fell directly across it, landing on her head and neck on the edge of the other side. Blood immediately started running from the side/back of her head where she hit, she was woozy and did not remember all of what had happened at the time and still does not now. The hostess left and the manager showed up and offered to let us out the back door to leave to avoid walking through the entire restaurant. My dad and I drove her to the ER where the doctor cleaned the blood and found a 2 inch laceration, a contusion on the back of her head and pretty bad elbow bruises as well as a horribly sore neck. He had to staple her head closed.
What should be done. This happened last night(2/20/09).
Yea, there are no signs whatsoever informing you there is a 3 ft drop. There are not even handicap signs you see for handicap access.
i used a small picture of one of the rooms to add on to and show what it looks like so you can get an idea. It was roughly put together so please excuse the sloppy artwork:

If there are no signs informing people of the foot wells then action can be taken. Talk to a personal injury lawyer to know exactly what can be done though.
I have witnessed all sorts of careless, and irresponsible, things resulting in injury in my time. I recall one time seeing the mangers at a supermarket running to put up 'caution wet' sign rather than rushing to the aid of someone who slipped on a mopped floor just to stop themselves being sued.

Boston Beer Works
If the two sinks in the restroom are installed at the 34″ maximum height to the rim, both mirrors are above the 40″ maximum height allowed at the lowest most reflective surface (521CMR Chater 30 subsection 30.11). Individuals that use a wheelchair should be able to use a mirror to see how pretty/handsome they are. As we all have learned, that inch, or two may as well be a mile when it comes to barrier free Equal Access!
Hi Scott,
I had no problem seeing myself and checking out my new ‘Beer Works’ hat in the mirror above the sink because the mirror is on a hinge and tilted.
I inluded a new picture of just the lower accessible sink with mirror and if you click on it you will see the mirror hangs on a tilted hinge.
