Wheelchair Accessibility Laws

Answers

In Illinois, are there any state laws about wheelchair accessibility and slot machines?

Are there any state officials that specialize in this subject? I went to a riverboat casino and had trouble reaching the buttons on some of the slots. As you can probably guess, I am a paraplegic.

There are many exceptions to the ADA, and one is boats, as they are not easily retrofitted to comply like a home or business would be.
Of course, if it's Indian owned they don't have to do anything as they are (technically) a sovereign nation.

Handicap Accessibility Law in New Jersey?

If a townhouse community was built in 1976, are they exempt to New Jersey Law for them to have to make the location handicap accessible now in 2009? Under the ADA, I have found they are because it was built before the ADA Act of 1977. I am a disabled gulf war veteran and my complex is refusing to do any changes such as cut curbs, provide access into the clubhouse where our community pool is, also where they hold the board meetings so all unit owners may attend and to make decisions about our community, what happens and to vote as well, etc etc. To gain access to the clubhouse you have to go up 10 steps, then once you are inside, you have to go up another 4 steps. They do have a ramp on the side, but that is illegal as well. To even get to the ramp, it's all grass. So when I am in my wheelchair how am I suppose to get to this illegal ramp over grass. The ramp itself, it is splintered wood for one , it only has ONE rail, and also the length of it is illegal. Then once you get up that ramp, it then leads to a step. Once inside, you have to go up 2 more steps. It is very nerve racking to think that they are exempt from any of these laws. To me it does not make any sense nor is it fair. Can someone give me some advice and maybe try to answer these questions for me? Is this legal in the State of New Jersey? Can they get away with this?

Contact the NJ Dept. of the Public Advocate about the situation and see what they have to say. Below is their contact info.

When a new restaurant opens up in an existing facility, it is not necessarily required to bring the bathrooms up to code.

County building inspector Delaney Aycock said the county cannot force the restaurant to change the structure unless it is changing the use of the building.

Southport Building Inspector Wayne Strickland said if the building is being remodeled, then an owner is required to use a portion of his or her budget to increase the accessibility, starting with the entrance.

He said a lot of old buildings in the area do not have the size to make them handicapped-accessible.

Strickland said normally if a remodel is taking place, the city would require handrails and try to ensure it was made as accessible as possible.
