i am looking for a barrier free threshold for an exterior door for wheelchair access eaze?

i had seen on a home improvement show some years back where they replaced a standard threshold with a barrier free one for wheelchair access eaze...i am now in need of one myself for my home and can't find one and none of my home improvement stores even know what i am talking about..this threshold would eliminate the wooden lip so you can wheel right in...i would appreciate if anyone has any information on this..thanks

You will have to remove the existing threshold and install a low-rise threshold. The threshold is 3/8" tall and then you'll have to install a door sweep on the existing door to keep moisture out.

Good Luck!!!!

What are the responsibilities of a developer for providing wheelchair access in residential accommodation?

I'm buying a new build flat. I use a wheelchair and when I reserved the flat I asked for doors with low thresholds to the balcony. Now 2 months later, they say they won't provide accessible doors, and they will build ramps (which will look awfull and I don't think will actually be possible given how narrow the balcony is) but I would have to pay for them.

Legally, do they have any responsibility to provide reasonable access? At the moment I couldn't even use the balcony.

If you are in the U.S.A. get a A.D.A. lawyer he or she will sue that developer because it is the law to have access and you will pay nothing but the lawyer about $5,000. + In California or Florida or New York or Colorado or Hawaii. The Developer will pay your lawyers fees and the fix up for total access under ADA laws plus damages in California for your suffering the only state for damages.
If your in U.K.or Canada or Australia, New Zea land they have the same kind of laws.
If your in India You have to pay because they do not have those laws.

EDIT.............Dimensions - Doors should have a minimum clear opening width of 800mm (830mm is preferred) for a wheelchair. Where double doors are used at least one door should be a minimum of 800mm wide.

How much does it generally cost to install a wheelchair accessible system in a small business?

I need to know this for school. How much is it to put in different types of wheelchair access systems, such as automatic doors, "please ring for assistance" buttons, etc?

This depends a LOT on details, but some basics would be...

Automatic door- about $1,000 installed if no complications.
Alert chimes- about $200
Ramps- about $500 for a short one, up to a few thousand for a longer one
Modified bathrooms can be cheap- under $300, to really expensive at over $10,000 depending on the mods needed

  • Taunton US Post Office

    .

Ric rang the buzzer for me; we waited about 5 minutes and a female postal worker greeted us. She asked what I wanted and I asked for a book of stamps. I gave her the exact amount of money ($8.80) for the cost of the stamps; she then shut the door leaving me in the dark, dingy hall; soon she came back and gave me my book of stamps. We exited and left.

Some have used the excuse that this Taunton U.S. Post Office is an historical building; therefore it is not required to be accessible. Yet I’ve been to many other historical buildings which have done barrier free renovations which nicely blend...
