At this stage I don't want to go spending a fortune on one of those chairs that lifts up, as we don't know how long I will be in this state. Meantime I am trying to work out what to get to help me to get out of my chair. I had thought a walking frame or something, but I don't know if there is something more suitable. All advice will be gratefully received.
If you think you will need it only short term then a walking frame would probably do the job fine.
Many chairs at home are very low, you can get something to raise the height of your chair which makes it easier to stand without help. I'll edit if I can find one similar online.
When you are ready to stand up, shuffle your bottom as far forward on the seat as you can, again it makes standing easier.
edit - here's a link, and they are not as expensive as I thought they might be! http://www.betterlifehealthcare.com/view _product.php?prodID=6782

In my area of Manchester there is 2 door to door services. These services are for the general public and have to be pre- booked. Often those with mobility problems, especialy those who use a wheelchair , do not get a booking.
This means I cannot go out very often. Or when and where I want to go. Although I have a power chair I can only use this for short local trips due to lack of sloping curbs and busy roads, and the weather.
I am often stuck in for months, and miss appointments including opticians, G.P hospital, etc (hospital transport is a nightmare to organise.) And I am unable to socialize and be as independent as I can be.
Am I the only one effected by The lack of disabled transport?
What can be done about the problem?
Hi I live in Texas. I have problems too. I found a system that works but their buses are so rough they nearly kill me. Part of my problem is that I live in a rural area and it is about a hundred miles to the specialists that I have to have. This system is set up by the state. It's called "City And Rural Rides" or C.A.R.R. medicaid pays for it if it is to the doctor, but it costs a lot to go shopping or anything. They have lifts for my scooter and like I said they always show up. The dr.s I see are bone spec., pain spec., heart spec. my regular dr. is only 30 miles away but riding makes me hurt so bad it usually puts me to bed for 2-3 days. It sometimes takes up to 6-8 hours to go to the dr. 30 miles away because they have to pick-up people from all over the place. Sometimes I wonder if it is all worth it. I have no one that can help because no one has a van with a lift. If I had a disabled van I could take myself some places and I have people who would drive if I couldn't. I too spend months alone in my apartment. I have care attendants come in about 4 hours a day. Anyway I've whined enough and I usually don't, it's just been a long weekend. Check with the state there should be something out there.
I use a wheel chair for mobility and carry my cell phone only for emergencies. Now I pay $19/month. I have never gone over 10 minute/month.
You might try Consumer Cellular. It's $9.95 a month and the phone is free. It's perfect for people who seldom use their phone.

TherExtras: Not a Community Walker
A wheelchair can be used for the safety of a child who runs away from parents in public places. A chair used for community outings by a child who is physically able but behaviorally at risk can be particularly helpful at theme parks, museums, large event venues, zoos , parks with paved paths, malls and to attend medically-related appointments.
I have had families who have both types of wheelchairs, ones that are smaller "community" wheelchairs as well as larger "more supportive" wheelchairs because of the difference in size, weight, and transportation adaptations required. Not all families can afford to access handicap adapted vehicles, and so the larger wheelchairs would be used for school and long distance travel (they do come apart but are still very heavy and bulky). The smaller wheelchairs were used for short trips within the community because they fit easier in the family's vehicle and were lighter to be continually lifting. You may also have a manual chair for at home and a power chair for longer distances. I personally have a light weight (soon to be ultra light weight) manual chair that I use most of the time, but I can "walk" with a walker or forearm crutches in my house for very short distances.
