What are ALL of the job duties of a Patient Escort /Transporter in a hopsital?

I was offered this position at a job fair at my school, but the recruiter was not very detailed in his description of the position. (I do not have a to drive any vehicles so this would all be INSIDE the hopsital) Can anyone tell me what else I would have to do besides push people around on wheelchairs and beds?

This volunteer will transport patients in wheelchairs to various areas; deliver or pick up items within the facility.

Patient Escorts transport conscious, semi-conscious and/or unconscious patients to and from floors and treatment areas in a campus hospital and/or clinic facility; and perform other related duties as required.

Incumbents typically transport patients in guerneys and/or wheelchairs; pick up and deliver routine and/or emergency reports, specimens, and patient care equipment; may maintain and repair charge plate imprinters; may determine priorities of requests for service; and may transport critically ill comatose or semi-comatose patients under the direct supervision of medical or nursing staff personnel.

Classes in the Patient Escort series are distinguished from classes in the Hospital Assistant series in that incumbents are primarily involved in the transportation of patients. They are distinguished from the Messenger class in that incumbents are typically concerned with the movement of patients in a hospital or clinic setting.

The series consists of two levels. Patient Escort is the operational entry level; and Senior Patient Escort is the lead operational level.

summer job at the hospital?

im 17 and i really want to get a summer job related to healthcare somehow, but also one that makes decent money. i was thinking of either cvs or getting a job at the hospital as a patient transporter? i dont really know a lot about it yet so i was just wondering if i have an interview what kind of questions would they ask me? i have actually interned down at the hospital during school twice a week and am trained in HIPAA and confidentiality and wheelchair safety. i heard you have to take some test to see if your strong enough to lift patients? im not exactly really strong but i would love to be around patients and work in a hospital. any advice. im going down there next weekend to see about working there.

Patient transporters mainly push the beds around the hospital. If you are really little and not too strong, it could be the wrong job for you, but I encourage you to work in a hospital this summer!

Career Change but Not sorta...?

Try to make this short:
-Im an LPN student basically in the first quarter. I have a 3.8 GPA
-Im 24 and my previous work history since I was 18 has been in the Industrial field (factory work). Very good at whatever I do.

I currently work at a world known hospital as a Transporter (transport patients within the hospital Example: Take patient from their room to CT or where ever by stretcher, wheelchair or by their bed.

I Do not have class again until April. In the meantime I have just started working Extra Duty as a Patient Care Technician AFTER I get off my regular job.

((I work 1:30pm - 10pm then change into scrubs and head down to my floor))

Here is what i am getting at: I know Im ultimately trying to become an RN and maybe a Doctor. BUT... Inside-I feel as though I am wasting my time going for LPN and that there is something on a greater scale that I can make the most difference in and that is more me. It is in the medical field but im not sure what it is yet..... anyone offer any advice or whatever.

All indicators point to the Health Care industry as being one of the best places to be working right now, yet even they are having to restructure because of the economic crisis. STAY IN HEALTHCARE! But here are some ideas, if you want to go beyond patient care, or you want a more fulfilling "make a difference" position: ADMINISTRATION. With a minimum of a Masters, Hospital Administrators can not only easily make 6 figures, they can make a big difference in policy. A Bachelors degree will get you in the door, and having clinical education is a plus.
BUSINESS OFFICE. Like Administration, but "micro" rather than "macro" issues. Office Managers and supervisors, in Billing, Coding, Accounting.
HUMAN RESOURCES. Working with professionals takes special skills for the selection, retention, training, of medical staff.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY. Here's my pick for the greatest need in the near future: President Obama has promised funding for the electronic transfer of healthcare records and point of service electronic healthcare information technology. According to the governments Occupational Outlook Handbook (www.bls.gov) claims that Medical Records and Health Information Technologies is expected to have double digit growth. Specifically mentioned is Professional Coding using HCPCS and ICD-9-CM. IT Programmers and professionals will be in high demand.

If you want to "work on the floor", positions such as UTILIZATION REVIEW COORDINATORS, which require both nursing and administrative skills; TRANSPLANTATION COORDINATORS, CANCER REGISTRARS and a host of other "coordinators" as hospitals and healthcare become more and more specialized.

Another option is to take your medical education to Big Pharma...hopefully keeping your altruistic values.

I hope this helps! I completed my Professional Coding Certification just last December, am a member of AAPC. Even though I have a B.A. and a Masters degree and have 20 years experience in the healthcare field, I believe that certification will eventually be required for reimbursement from government sources, with private insurances following closely behind. At that point, a CPC may make the difference for all administrative, support, and even some clinical positions!

What precautions to take when TTC?

I work at a hospital and my husband and I have recently decided to try to conceive. This would be our first. I'm almost 22 and he's 24 and we've been married almost 2 years now.

But, here's my question...I work as a hospital transporter (basically I just push wheelchairs and stretchers around all day) and I come into contact with all kinds of...well...everything everyday. I'm CONSTANTLY washing my hands.

Is there anything I should do to take extra precautions during this time and when I get pregnant? I run in to MRSA and C-Diff on a daily basis, and also TB and other airborne illnesses, as well as coming into close contact with X-Rays, CT scans, and MRI, though I'm not in the room during the scan.

Please help! ANY advice appreciated very much!

Love, Kat~

You don't have to worry in the radiology department because you are not in the room.

  • Transport Chair | There's a New Wheelchair Company in Town

Unfortunately, there continues to be a market for wheelchairs for the sick, injured and moderately to severely mobility impaired.  Regardless of whether the condition is short-term, long-term, or permanent, for the foreseeable future, individuals as well as institutions will continue to need transport chairs.  The salient point that is often missed is that not everyone needs the same kind. It took far too long to recognize that persons with permanent mobility issues might desire or require chairs that enabled them to be more active than standard models might allow.  However, once that need was acknowledge, the manufacturer of wheelchairs in all formats came quickly, with wheelchair companies, like anyone else, noticing a market and aiming at it. Today there are chairs on the market that enable paraplegics and double amputees to compete in races or participate in other activities that were once denied them.  By the same token, people who would have been forced to be dependent on another person for movement and communication can steer chairs with their breath and talk by picking out letters through facial movements. There is no area that has not been responded to. Or so it seems.  However, one of the biggest markets for transport chairs has largely had its particular and specialized needs ignored.  Granted, this is generally because most people have failed to really note the need, or if they were aware of it, to believe anything could be done.  Fortunately for all, one wheelchair company saw the need and in filling it has made things better for all parties concerned. There is a chair on the market that can only be propelled by an attendant, whose brakes automatically lock when it isn’t moving and which cannot be folded up and easily carted away.  It also is built for easy side loading and can be equipped with numerous accessories, such as O2 tanks.  The cost savings in loss alone will pay for the chairs, everything else will wind up saving the institution money.  All this from one innovative wheelchair company.
