do you find wheelchair becky offensive to people in wheelchairs??
Barbie the Disabled Photographer

i have the wheelchair becky barbie doll and the box says "she's the school photographer!" i like that they made dolls to represent different people and its nice for a child in a wheelchair to atleast have the option of having a toy in the wheelchair. the problem i have is the way the made her "the school photographer" its not horrible, but something about it seems like a put down, like she is not quiet cool enough. they might as well have made her part of the drama club!

=/
it's only an insult if you've got a problem with photographers... I don't see what your issue is, to be honest. (Also - what's wrong with Drama Club? Isn't that just people who like doing drama..? :s)

on the other hand CALLING her "Wheelchair Becky" could be a bit offensive, her wheelchair shouldn't be her defining feature ;)

Birthday gift for a four year old girl?
121.365 - joe x kidrobot

I want to get my friends daughter a birthday gift. She is turning four. She has spina bifida and is in a wheelchair so toys need to be appropriate for her to play with on the floor or at a table. She is incredibly smart and very social. $50 tops for price.

Can you get her some children's books? When my daughter turned 4, she got so much plastic crap that just takes up space and never gets played with. She enjoys her books more than anything else.

Where can I buy a toy car (Barbie)?
Rock and Roll

Please let me know. Again; like my miniature wheelchair question, Please do not tell me Ebay! I need this for a project and can only find 50 dollar ones at Wal-Mart. I'm looking to spend about 20 dollars it's only a school project.

Thanks =]
Thank you, I looked at the car and it is really cheap! Thanks soo much! =]

does anyone know the age/ approx.value of a "Gendron" wheelchair?
Politically correct toys

its wood, and has 3 wheels. I know that gendron originally made toy cars, then after ww2, they started making hospital equip, but thats all I can seem to come up with.

Here is what I have been able to find out about Gendron Wheelchairs.

Gendron Wheel Company Wheelchair 1940's ($825 or best offer)

Amazing condition Gendron Wheel Company Invalid Chair was made sometime between 1941 and 1949. It is made of oak with a cane back seat, wood leg extensions, and a padded seat that has been recovered. The back of this chair has a brass plate attached that reads, "Donated by Aetna Farm Bureau Group 1949". I haven't been able to figure out who or where they donated this to. Towards the bottom of the back of the chair is the companies metal tag. Gendron Wheel Company Perrysburg Ohio Pat. no. B19 274. The Gendron Wheel Co. was incorporated in Toledo, Ohio, in 1880. It manufactured steel-and-wire wheels for its own bicycles, tricycles, wheelchairs, go-cars, baby and doll carriages, wagons and wheelbarrows. In 1941 Gendron was reorganized and incorporated in Perrysburg, Ohio. The Perrysburg plant closed in 1963. The company is still in business, making wheelchairs and other medical equipment. It is now in Archbold, Ohio. The are the oldest and longest operating manufacturer of wheelchairs in the United States.

To figure out age: My antique wooden wheelchair has a cane back and seat. A metal plate on the back reads "Gendron Wheel Co., Perrysburg, Ohio, Catalog No. 960." The patent number on the seat is 2476769.

The Gendron Wheel Co. was incorporated in Toledo, Ohio, in 1880. It manufactured steel-and-wire wheels for its own bicycles, tricycles, wheelchairs, go-cars, baby and doll carriages, wagons and wheelbarrows. But the patent number on your wheelchair was issued in 1949, so it was not made earlier than that.

Another clue to its age is the Perrysburg location. When Gendron was reorganized in 1941, it was incorporated in Perrysburg, about 12 miles southwest of Toledo. The United States entered World War II that year, and Gendron's war effort led the company to concentrate on manufacturing wheelchairs and hospital stretchers.

The Perrysburg plant closed in 1963. The company is still in business, making wheelchairs and other medical equipment. It is now in Archbold, Ohio.

Hope this helps.

  • The Lure of the Fuzzy: Stuffed-Animal Blessing Service ...

Most children love stuffed-animal toys, made with plush or another soft cloth.  Lots of grown-up love them too, but sometimes we are shy to admit it.  Maybe we’re just shy  to admit that we might still have the feelings, motivations, and the very spirit of our childhood selves.  Your grown up ministers thought a service like this one could be a way to give permission to everyone to express appreciation for our stuffed, cloth-covered or fuzzy friends, and to consider what they have done for us.              The most famous manufacturer of plush animals began in Germany in 1880. Now the company is known as Steiff GMBH.   Its founder was Margarete Steiff.  Margarete had had polio as a baby and used a wheelchair all her life.  As a young adult she had a job as a seamstress and began making animals as a hobby.  First, it was elephants, then dogs, cats and pigs. With her brother’s help she started the company, making designs and prototypes herself.  She’s been dead a long time, but the company maintains her high standards for quality and safety for its products.  In 1902, her nephew Richard designed a stuffed bear.  Thanks to Theodore Rooselvelt, in five years they were selling nearly a million teddy bears every year, many of them exported to the United States.
