Does anyone know where my dad and I can get plans for a temporary ramp? All the plans we have found involve making it a permanent part of the house. My mother just had surgery that is going to confine her to a wheelchair for only about 3 months. We need a plan that is quick to put up and take down, but will be strudy enough to last a couple months. Any links or ideas? Thanks!
My husband built a wooden temporary ramp for my mother using 2x4's and plywood. He attached it to our deck and when she no longer needed it, he removed it. You can use any plan for a wooden wheelchair ramp but attach it to a deck or porch using screws that can be removed later.Do not use materials that make it a permanent fixture like concrete place the support studs on paving stones to keep them from sinking in the dirt and follow the rest of the plans Just use screws instead of nails so it can be removed and disasembled when no longer needed..Make sure you use something on the surface for traction and old piece of carpet or a plastic runner turned bumpy side up.

The Church has three sets of 8 steps with a landing between each set. I have contacted a couple of people who are willing to come and do an estimate. Frankly they are coming from out of town and just coordinating the estimate is giving me a headache. I just want to know if anyone has ever had this done. And I would love to have a ballpark figure. Is this hundreds or thousands of dollars we are talking about?
It ought to be hundreds rather than thousands but it'll depend on the people you've got doing it.
Can you speak to the church involved and persaude them to cover the bill (or a high percentage of it) if you co-ordinate finding someone who will build a good quality removable ramp that can be stored and re-used? Perhaps they would be willing to reduce the fee for you to use the building if you leave behind a set of ramps for them?
If not then it is possible to buy portable ramps that you simply lay over the steps (they'll extend further than the steps) that might do the trick. They feel a bit unsteady to wheel on but if it's only for a day it's cheaper than purpose built removable ramps and it's a whole lot better than no access at all. With those you'd be able to keep them in your garage or wherever in case another event comes up that you'd like them for.

I live in Saskatchewan Canada, and I need to build a wheelchair ramp. The door is 40" off the ground. What is the ratio of rise to run? Do I need a permit if this is only temporary? Someone will be pushing the wheelchair up the ramp, so we can go with a steeper incline. from the front of the house to the sidewalk is 16'. ANY help will be greatly appreciated.
Believe it is the same in Canada & US but better check local regs for permits for temporary structures as well as requirements for ramp width, railings & "landing" size while your'e at it. Rule is 12' of run for every inch of rise so you are looking at a 40 foot + ramp.
To maintain the proper incline you will have to build the ramp with "switchbacks" like a mountain road with flat landings at each turn & at door entrance.
Need to check clear door opening & direction of swing as well.
Just a guess , but don't think you can get away with a steeper incline , pushed chair or not in Saskatchewan esp if snow & ice will be an issue.
Have seen ramps on temporary field office & classroom trailers
Maybe you can rent .
Thinking a scaffolding rental firm?
Best Regards

Facts About Wheelchair Ramp Rentals | THM
Wheelchair ramp rentals are ideal for people who need a temporary wheelchair ramp. Wheelchair ramp rentals are often used for people who are temporarily confined to a wheelchair during a rehabilitation, for special occasions, or until a permanent wheelchair ramp can be installed.
If a person needing a wheelchair ramp does not have a local source for wheelchair ramp rentals, companies that specialize in these rentals can be found by doing a search on a search engine such as Google. Some of these companies provide other disability-related accessories for the home.
When considering renting a wheelchair ramp, the person should consider how long the ramp will be needed and the cost of building or buying a wheelchair ramp. Sometimes the wheelchair ramp is needed longer than the person originally thought. In these cases, the wheelchair ramp rental company may apply part of the rental fees toward the purchase of the wheelchair ramp.
