How do you modify a standard wheelchair for off-road travel?

I've got a double amputation and it'll be a while until I can get fitted for another leg. meanwhile I'd like to get out and have some traveling fun (at least). Sitting alone in the house is not my cup of tea. The slick solid tires on this chair are not workable in grass or gravel, nd I don't have anyone for the hard parts; i prefer it that way, but still need some pneumatic knobby traction.

Manual chair? You can usually get a bike shop or someone similar to switch your back tires from solids to pneumatics with good tread- but the trick is that you should get gray tires- not black. If your rims don't have an air stem hole, you may need new rims as well.

You can find the parts you need at http://www.ocelco.com.

Front tires probably need changing also. Don't worry about pneumatic, but at least go wider if you can.

Other tidbits...
- Try to make sure your center of gravity is right over your rear axle- it will distribute your weight for better 'flotation' over rough ground
- Make sure your brakes get adjusted to fit the new tires
- Look at your anti-tips. Make sure they are adjusted high enough, and if you don;t have any, consider them. Rough ground can toss you backwards easily
- Consider some safety gear- seat belt, cell phone, maybe even a small air horn.

Can a 1992 Lexus SC400 fit a standard wheelchair in the trunk?

I gotta know. Please, its for a possible good deed if it works out, it'll be good karma for you too.

I drive a lexus and my mother has a wheelchair which fits in the boot (trunk as you call it!) but we have to take the little feet off the chair first to make it fit. The only hassle I have had with it is damage to the paintwork as the lip of the boot is a bit high for swinging the heavy chair in and I'm not that big and strong!
Car is old now though so I don't respect it as much as I did when it was new.

do apartments have to be able to get wheelchair into front doors?

when my daughter rented the apartment the landlord knew she was blind with other disabilities, since then she has fallen and broke her kneecap and is now in a wheelchair. The doorway has the standard door on and it is hard for me to get the chair into the doorjam.

No, apartments are not required to be wheelchair accessible. If the apartment has become a problem for your daughter, she should consider trying to get out of her lease and find a more suitable place. If she can find a replacement tenant the landlord may be open to that without any penalties.

Where can I buy 48 inch doors?

48 inches is the standard wheelchair accessible door width. I'm looking for doors that are 48 inchs wide. Lowe's does not sale them. I am looking for something cheap, nothing fancy. Thanks!

try two 24" doors. they will be a lot easier to hang. they'll be just like internal french doors.
if they are for the exterior they will be like external french doors.
this wheel chair must be very wide. my mother was in a wheel chair and i used 33" doors 2'9" she got through them with ease.
if it is imperative you have a 48" door it's unlikely you will be able to buy one off the shelf so to speak as 4' is not a stock size and would probably be made to measure. expensive.

Ever used a trailer for hauling a wheelchair?

Can you recommend necessary modification or specifications for me? I tried using a standard utility trailer but the bounce factor was just too rough on the computerized controls. I want something small that I can tow behind my car so I assume I will need to start with a basic trailer and get some customization. Ideas? References? Where to start?

You need to contact your local mobility dealer to discuss options for transporting your wheelchair. I would recommend getting a lift for the side of your vehicle, in lieu of a trailer. These are specifically designed to prevent damage to your mobility device and would be safer for you! To find the mobility dealer closest to you, visit the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) website: http://www.nmeda.org.

  • Boris wants better pram and wheelchair access | News

LONDON could undergo changes to make it more accessible for wheelchair users and mothers with prams in the run-up to the Olympics.

The Mayor has commissioned a major survey with input from those who find it difficult to get around the capital, particularly disabled and deaf Londoners.

The survey is part of Boris Johnson 's Equal Life Chances For All consultation document, which he launched today.

He has already appointed wheelchair Paralympian Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson to advise the Transport for London board. Mr Johnson said: "How many times have we watched a wheelchair user or parent with a pram struggling [to move around the city]?"

He is also planning a similar document investigating violence against women.
