I’m a full-time caretaker for my elderly (80 years old today – happy birthday, Ma!) invalid mother. She has extremely limited mobility and needs assistance to get out of bed, in and out of her wheelchair, on and off her portable potty, etc. It’s gotten harder and harder lately to help her, and at the rate we’re going, I’M going to end up crippled from the physical exertion (I ain’t no spring chicken myself...).
When she’s been in the hospital, I have seen 100-pound Filipino nurses routinely and seemingly effortlessly haul her around, up, and down like a rag doll (and my mother is not a small woman), so I know sheer strength isn’t the key – positioning, technique, leverage, etc. is. Are there any websites, books, etc. that might describe (and illustrate) the best methods to keep her safe and keep ME out of traction?
It is easy to injure yourself, and maybe your mom, if you don't learn how to do help her move properly. I think it is great that you want to learn to use good 'body mechanics'. With some instruction and supervised practice you should be able to learn the 'tricks'.
Check with the local Chapter of your American Red Cross to see if they offer 'caregiver' courses. If not, check with our local Area Agency on Aging to see which agency offers these classes.

i am 3 going to be 4 months pregnant and i am going to disneyland. my doctors says maes sure i dont stand all day long and have planty of sit down and rests. So i am looking for a wheelchair. does snyone kow where i can find a very cheap affordable wheelchair? i would like it to be manual, my husband says he'll push me around and that our kids will take turns sitting on my lap.So any positive advice and any help will be fine thank you.
You can try at Medical Supply places (some of them are located in Super Wal-Marts now). Another thing you can do is to call several days before you know you are going to Disneyland to see about reserving a wheelchair for your trip when you get there.
I don't have arthritis but am designing an easel for people who do. so far in final solution I have removed the wing nuts and replaced them with cranks. so it is easy to reposition without moving the canvas or getting up.
you can sit or stand (even in a wheelchair) because the mechanism is placed on a side table like unit. Also there is plenty of storage space and a wide area to hold materials.
Also any feedback I can get is most appreciated. Thanks everyone.
1. The best place for a crank control would be roughly near the knee while seated. It offers a pretty neutral position for people to reach without stress on the shoulder, elbow, or wrist.
2. Crank? Have you looked at a power unit? You can usually use a cheapo power screwdriver unit as a driver, and re-wire the trigger to an easy-access switch.
3. Have you checked if the product is already made? I believe I have seen these- although they were pretty expensive.
4. Just FYI- I don;t know what plane of movement you are thinking of, but if it can move up and down AND left and right it will be a LOT more useful.

I have a back problem that causes me to need to stand, sit, stand, etc a lot throughout the day, and need to find a desk I can raise and lower. I've only found ones for people who are disabled and those seem to be too big (so they can fit a wheelchair, which I don't need) and to be very expensive. I just need one wide enough for a laptop and whatever papers I'm working with. I'm in the London area, so somewhere near there or via the internet is preferable. Thank you!
Thanks for the quick answers. Stevie t, couldn't find any adjustable desks on that site. Chancer, what's a poofie? And rykker, I tried Ikea's only adjustable desk and it wouldn't hold my laptop steady. Thanks for the help, anyway!
Thanks for the info regarding the chairs. I won't go into details, but I don't need a chair, I need a desk that can be altered. No wall for the shelves, but a brilliant idea. Thanks, everyone.
i know ikea do adjustable tables, but i think they may be a bit fiddley to adjust, maybe you should check them out anyway though, may be a cheap solution
i want to find a online virtual world where my character can be in a wheelchair.
it would be best if i could choose what sort, e.g. sport, electric, manual etc. and if i could specify my disability that would be good but if not thats ok.
i want to be able to SEE them wheeling around, unlike some crappy sites where everyone just stands there (well, i would sit there but . . . .)
it should be free for at least their basic account.
Gaia Online. You can do basically anything on Gaia Online. The cost is... free. Just go to the shop and buy a wheelchair. It could be in the monthly collectables. For more help look me up on Gaia. Im legendscape. Just search my name and i'll be able to assist you. hehe, yur welcome.

Leave it to my daughter to give us a true sit-com worthy delivery! I brought a little notebook and pen to the hospital so she could write down her account of things but I’ll give you a brief synopsis here. She started complaining of back pain on Monday but it was constant and not intermittent like labor pains. By 9 PM she was timing contractions at about 9 minutes apart but still wasn’t sure if it was labor. Around 11 PM, she called and said that she thought it was labor and she was going...
