Seating Cushion

I created some seating near my entrance door using 12" cabinets that I mounted to the wall with a 2X4 as a spacer and support (along with some other shoring up to make sure you could sit on it without it breaking. Anyway, I want to create a cushion to go on top (I'm assuming out of plywood, batting and material). I've seen some DIY TV that show the process in passing but no detail. Anyone done this or know of a turtorial?

Go to your local fabric, or furniture supply, store. They'll have the cushions, batting, instruction booklets and fabric you'll require.

Our request for an impromptu demonstration of Oregon Aero seat cushions brought a lot of smiles.

I've had a Permobil C500 wheelchair with the corpus seating for the past two years. For several months now I have been getting pain in my tailbone. I have some people recommend either a Roho cushion or Jay cushion. Both are expensive and to my surprise both companies offer about 20 different cushions. I'd like to hear the opinion of some end users.

As a C2-C3 quadriplegic I use a ROHO High Profile, my chair is an Invacare TDX5. I have tried the Jay type cushion but had a few skin problems, but since I switched to the ROHO, I have had no problems at all. Hope this helps.

My son and I are going to the Samsung 500 at TMS. The seating is aluminum bleachers, I would like to buy some sort of a seat cushion. Does anyone have suggestions on which ones are best and what is allowed in the track?

Buy the cheapest ones you can find at the track. I call them Butt Pads. I have some that I bought at Bristol a few years back that I got for $5 each. Black and white checkered, about 2" thick, plastic covered...withstand inadvertent soda/beer/nacho mishaps. They last forever. And have a little loop for easy carrying. I also have some I bought at Daytona...(forgot to bring the black and white checkered ones...doh!) About $6 each. They're light and cheap, do the job. I usually go to cold weather races where the metal bleacher or chairs make your butt numb, so a butt pad is necessary equipment. As for comfort, they help, but I rarely sit for really long periods of time....except at Daytona this year...dumb ole pothole!

I have a plain round stool and want to add a padded seat cushion. How do you make a round seat cushion?

Measure the diameter of your stool
Decide what you will use to fill it, filling or seating foam
Using foam, measure the depth of the foam you choose ½”, 1” 2”
Add this measurement with an additional 1” to the diameter of your stool

Stool diameter 12”; 2” foam; plus 1 “ = 15” diameter.

Recycle a newspaper or paper grocery bag and make yourself a template with your final diameter measurement – Card or Poster board also works well for templates

Decide if you will be using the same fabric for top and bottom.
Some prefer the non slip material for bottom

Place template on material, draw and cut your pattern. One each, for top and bottom.

Place two pieces of fabric together, right sides facing each other, and stitch half of the diameter ¾” from edge - if using filling you can sew ¾ of the diameter. If you have the option of double needle on your machine, I recommend using the double stitch for strength, or you can run a second stitch of the first round.

I suggest cutting little ‘v’s at 1” spaces around the edge of your fabric before turning to allow the roundness be smooth. (Do not touch your stitching)

Turn inside out, so right side of fabric is on the outside, stitching is on the inside, stuff and hand stitch closed. If using filling, you should be able to machine sew the closing.

You can detail the outside seams with piping, using fabric glue and a little hand stitching if you like.
