Reclining wheelchair

elderly person uses a transfer board to move from wheelchair to bed, etc, her skin is breaking down any ideas?

my mother is 80 years old, 60 years in wheelchair, she uses a transfer board to get from wheelchair to recliner, toilet, and bed. She has to slide and does not have any lift in her arms, the flesh on her bottom is breaking down. any ideas on how to protect her flesh so she can continue to transfer? Is there a product or bandage that she could wear to protect that area? she has no use of her legs and depends on her arms, she cannot wear underpants.

That's called bed sores. Can be life threatening. Here's an idea......... GO TO THE DOCTOR.

What Recliner is good for disabled people?

I'm looking for a comfortable recliner for an independant older man in a wheelchair, for when he just wants to relax and watch TV or read.
He had a recliner before (and loved it!), but had difficulty transferring between the recliner and his wheelchair. He has no use of his legs, and so he cannot stand. He uses only his arms to move around.

Are there any recliners that are made for people in his situation? Specifically, I think it would be helpful if the armrest could slide out of the way, or if the seat could be raised or lowered vertically to the same level as his wheelchair.

I know there are the "dumptruck" style chairs that tilt people into a standing position, but I don't think they would work well in his situation, and he might just end up on the floor.
Ideally he would like one that looks like a normal living room recliner, and not have wheels!!!

Thanks :)

I have no experience wit these, but I used Google to search on "disability transfer recliner" and found this item: http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Transfer-Recline r-Chair-680_W0QQitemZ5582928052QQihZ018Q QcategoryZ19265QQcmdZViewItem
In the description, it says, "Both arms lower for easy transfer" which is what you were looking for. At $2,095, it isn't inexpensive, but neither was my lift recliner (dump truck style as you described it). It was about the same price range.

Edit: Here is another on sale from a UK supplier: http://www.mobilitymegastore.co.uk/item3 54.htm , It is priced at £1,595.00 which would put it in the nearly $3000 price range, but it looks much more like what you might want to see in a home rather than a hospital room.

My family needs a ProBono lawyer in Owensboro,KY.?

My parents live in Indiana, but my mother has a brother in Kentucky who is in a assisted group home with 2 other men. He has cerebral palsey. His helper has complete control of him and is using him to gain use of his money, ie. having him buy a freezer, furnature, recliner (he is in a wheelchair all the time), drapes, taking vacations to places SHE wants to go. She talked him into buying a van which he no longer has. She or someone takes him where ever he needs to go. He cannot drive. She lives there and almost never takes any days off. My parents spoke with the director who is in control of hiring and placing the helpers almost 6 weeks ago telling her to put another helper in his group home. Nothing has been done about this problem. When they visited him 6 weeks ago he sat there with his head down never speaking to them while this woman shouted at them the whole time saying she would call the police and have them thrown out. All they did was go to visit him while they were in town. He has been in the hospital twice now with an imbalance in his meds. We think she has overdosed him. He has been there for decades and there has never been a problem with any of his helpers before this woman.
Please, I need serious answers.

Contact the Bar Association of the nearest large city (or of the whole state of Indiana) for recommendations and referrals for pro bono attorneys. Also contact the social welfare office of Owensboro. You need to report this woman, and get him a new caregiver before it's too late!
