This, almost certainly, will have to be the type that is steered by a helper at the back but is battery powered - the wheelchair user has impaired vision and the helper is not fit enough to push it up the hills in Lourdes unaided. Any ideas, especially websites or email addresses for anyone hiring such wheelchairs would be greatly appreciated.
Best is to contact the Lourdes site itself. They have a whole system to greet and help pilgrims, I'm sure you're not the first one to ask that question. Click on contact, you have telephone and email. I heard you could also have helpers to push the wheelchairs for you.

The one where the person sitting in the chair can move it around with a little joystick thing? How much would those normally cost? And where do they sell them?
They can cost anywhere from 1,000 to 20,0000. It depends on what you are looking for. A Jazzy goes for 6,000, that has the hand control. You can buy a power wheelchair at most Home Health Equipment stores. Also online.

If someone is severely disabled and must use a motorized wheelchair, how would that person open a door on his/her own. and if not Is there any product or device that would allow him/her to successfully open a door?
Yes thank you, but the force is not present with all people. I am talking about disabled people with limited range of motion in his/ her arms and wants to open doors on his/her own. "on his/her own" means without any help from magic blue buttons or other humans. thanks if u can help.
Some people keep a metal hanger in their chair for that very purpose. You bend it so it is as long as possible and than you use the hook to grab hold of the door, than you back out your chair. You open the door as wide as possible. Than move the chair forward around the door so the door closes around you and the chair. Than inch your way forward while the chair closes behind you.
No hanger, or no grabbable door handle, and no automatic door - you sit and wait for someone who can help you. That is why automatic doors are not just 'nice' they are essential for many people.

Self-powered Wheelchair Produces Electricity For Night Outings ...
Moving unaided on a wheelchair becomes a difficult task for the physically challenged, which becomes more risky during night. Adding mobility to the life of the disabled, a group of South Korean designers, including Min-Goo Kim, Yun-Jin Chang and Su-Eun Park, have come up with an innovative wheelchair that produces and accumulates electricity, as the disabled move it during the day, to light their way at night. This not only makes mobility safe for the users, but also produces green energy and supports a green lifestyle. Featuring LEDs that emit light during night, the wheelchair makes use of magnets that convert the wheel rotation into electricity in the electric plant, while the coil moves power through wires to the switch and LEDs. Moreover, users may check the gathered electricity on the LCD display located in the center of each wheel.
