Hi My mom is totally disabled and cannot walk at all. We are planning to go on vacation from Newark to Hawaii, and there is a plane change in Chicago. I have never traveled by air before, and we plan on taking my moms wheel chair, and power scooter. I need tips and advice for this.
Can we bring both on the airplane, if not can we bring one of the items.
How can she get to/use the bathroom.
Do we have to book the items as baggage
During the plane change will she have access to her wheelchair/scooter so she can transfer planes
Any other tips for traveling with this stuff
Any other tips for traveling
I'm not sure about whether you can take both, and have doubts about the scooter, but I know people can and do take wheel chairs when they travel by air, and that the people at the airports are very helpful. The airlines are excellent, too. One thing I urge you to do is to be absolutely sure you have plenty of time to change planes! I find that they tend to schedule those times too tightly -- at 90 minutes! -- which is fine ONLY if an airplane is not late, not held up at the gate, not -- you get the picture! And here's my biggest and most important suggestion (beyond ignoring garbage like what you saw in the previous answer!) -- deal with a travel agent! It will cost you nothing and save you a lot of worry and hassle. A travel agent can answer your questions, find out about the scooter issue, find out about any documentation you may find helpful to carry with you, arrange for air tickets and ground transportation, notify the airline about the special passenger, etc. A good travel agent is worth his or her weight in gold. I travel quite a bit and my travel agent always handles things so smoothly my biggest challenge is deciding what to pack for myself, and she always seems to be able to find prices that are better than those that are published. Have a great trip!

you could take yours with you the airline must fly it for free, it does not count as an item of luggage
try ebay .. .those things sell really well on Ebay.
Steel expanded mesh surface with raised 3" side rails
Carrier can be folded up flat vertically against the rear of the vehicle saving space when not in use
Universal design can be used with most power wheelchairs and scooters
I am fifteen and have muscular dystrophy. I can move pretty much all my muscles just fine, but I'm weak and stiff and can't stand up without help. My old powered scooter has broken, and I need a powered wheelchair that is:
-easily transported (folding chair absolutely preferred)
-not binding
-can go in the grass and dirt without getting stuck
-has removable armrests and footrests, or they swing completely out of the way easily
-leather seated, or not too cushioned
-not too close to the ground (I'm short, and I don't mind my feet dangling a bit. I can't get up if it's too close to the ground)
-pretty fast (max speed 6mph+ )
-..and here's the kicker, I'd love for it to have a lifting seat that can help me stand up. This is where I've had problems, I can't find one that will do this.
It's ok if it doesn't meet all the criteria. Basically, I like the feel of a normal, manual chair, but it's powered, and can lift. Please give me links to or brands of ones you think I might like. Thank you!!
This chair is sweet. It can climb stairs, stand you up to the height of a person standing, and lots of neat stuff. Check it out here:

OK - Creative halloween costume ideas for people in wheelchairs? I'm in a power wheelchair (not a scooter), thin, average height 30something guy.
Hi dear!!!
If you are in a wheelchair this Halloween, either as a result of an injury or disability, that doesn’t mean that you cannot dress up for the holiday. Instead, with a little creativity you can create your own Halloween costume that uses the wheel chair as a prop or as a support for the costume itself.
Injured skier
Many a skier has fallen to injury on the slopes. Wrap up a foot in an ace bandage, and dress in a warm sweater/jacket, hat, and gloves or mittens. You could even attach the skies and poles to the back of the chair to complete the look.
Drummer
Using spare round-shaped containers, create a drum set. Cut out a large round circle to attach for the front as the bass drum. Dress in rock-and-roll attire and carry a set of drumsticks. If you want, carry a portable boom box with drumbeats recorded to it and pretend to drum along.
His/Her Royal Highness
Wrap the chair in gold or silver wrapping paper. Decorate with fake jewels and other royal embellishments. Buy or create a king or queen costume to wear, complete with crown and scepter and prepare to go out in style!
The Great Pumpkin
Purchase one of the large lawn bags designed to be stuffed with leaves so that it looks like a pumpkin. Cut it and attach so that it fits over the wheelchair. Create a green hat with a stem (and leaves and vines if you want to get creative) and you are an instant jack-o-lantern.
Surprised Bather
Attach a pole to the back of the wheelchair. At the top of the pole, mount a large wire ring and a shower head. On the ring, hang a shower curtain, adjusting it so that you can still see to move. Put on a bathing cap, wrap a towel around you, and carry a scrub brush. You now look like you were surprised in the tub!
Many Halloween costumes can be adjusted to fit a wheelchair. Just keep in mind not to use anything that might get caught in the wheels and interfere with movement.
Enjoy !!!
