How do you prevent the build up of static electricity on an electric (power) wheelchair giving the user shocks?
Shoprider Jumbo 3 Wheel Mobility Scooter

A metal chain fastened on the back hasn't helped and I know many people complain of such shocks.
He doesn't run on nylon carpets but this occurs in all sorts of places (indoor and outdoor) and weathers.

I have never had this happened, so I have to wonder is this is a fault with the chair itself. I would take it to where it is serviced and ask them to look into it. This should not happen.

The plates in the batteries are getting sulfated. You may be able to recover some capacity with a equalization charge or blow off some of the sulfates with a dangerous reverse polarity shock but the best thing to do is to replace the batteries. There are battery shops where they dissemble the batteries, grind down the plates and reassemble with fresh acid. You can probably get a remanufactured battery there cheaper. Indeed, you should let them do the equalization charge rather than try yourself as the electrolyte will boil and hydrogen gas will be produced, they're used to doing dangerous things like that.

In general, you don't want to do a deep discharge if you can avoid it. The best thing to do is recharge at 50%.

Electric Power question?
Used Pride Jazzy Select 6 Electric Wheelchair

An electric wheelchair is powered by TWO 12 V lead acid batteries and an electric motor rated at a maximum output power of 1 hp. Each battery has an energy capacity of 600 W-hrs. The motor has an efficiency rating of 85%. Assuming that the batteries are fully charged, for how many minutes can the motor deliver the rated output power before the batteries must be recharged?

Output = 1 hp = 746 watts

Energy from source = 2 * 600 = 1200 watt-hours

Since efficiency = 85%, then

Input = 746/0.85 = 877.65 watts

Time = 1200/877.65

Time = 1.37 hours = 82 minutes

Hope this helps.

Is there a charge for an Electric wheelchair and can they go on a plane?
EWH Training

My wife uses a battery powered chair. and would like to take trips. How do airlines handle this problem?

Call the airline and ask if the battery that your chair operates on is FAA approved. If so, you will be able to planeside check the electric chair on the jet bridge. If your wife is unable to walk by herself, the airline will provide someone to help your wife to board the aircraft with a wheelchair that can fit down the aircraft aisle. There is no fee to check your chair as you are not able to bring it in the cabin of the aircraft. Once you land your wife's chair will meet her once she gets off the aircraft on the jetbridge. Just make sure the airline you are taking is aware so they are able to plan ahead of time and it will save you time as well!

Hope this helps!
