We have 4 stairs and I'd love to find a way for my sister who needs a wheelchair to come visit us. I don't need a permanant structure, she would come only 2 -3 times per year if we could get her up some kind of ramp.

My church is on a low budget and we can't afford to install a permanent wheelchair ramp. Does anyone have experience with these? What do we need to consider before purchasing one? Is it even feasible to use a portable ramp for a church? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
It depends on how high you need to go. The maximum pitch for a handicap ramp is 1" per foot of run. If you need to rise 5', you are looking at a 60' ramp. That's a lot of portable ramp. Talk to the carpenters union in your area. My local does a lot of volunteer work, and one of our most common projects is building handicap ramps. You may be able to get a crew out there to knock it out in a day or two. All you would have to pay for is materials. Hope this helps.

this lady has been coming into my shop for 12 yrs with her wheelchair with no problem at all. her husband just lifts it in and out as your would a baby in a pram.however she is now kicking up a fuss saying i should provide a portable ramp for her.iv wrote to the council as i lease the shop from the council they say i dont need council or planning for a portable ramp however i dont see why i shoul pay for the ramp for 1 person when we have seen her get out of her chair and walk up the step to come into the shop when her husband had broken his wrist. she said shes within her rights to sue me and the council for not providing a ramp for her.its an old building. thanks for your help.
thanks starligh for that. i do feel she is out to get as much money as she can she gets megga disability benifits.she has 3 carers and cant keep any because of her horible attitude.shes just not a nice woman and i cant get rid of her because she books her appointments as she leaves.
unfortunately, she's right. By law, any business has to provide handicap service to the public. If you own the building, then its your responsibility to provide a ramp. If you rent, then it is your landlords responsibility. She can sue, but it would be the landlord who gets sued. If its you she's sueing, you can use your renters insurance.
the easiest way to solve this problem is to just get a bag of quick cement and crerate a ramp for her.
hi i am friends with an elderly lady who has had both legs amputated - she would love a power chair because her arms are now getting tired and sore - she doesn't seem to be getting help from her social worker or ot - her kitchen needs adapted too as she still has cupboards high on the wall which are of no use to her - she had to buy her own stair lift and portable ramp but she just cant afford a power chair - any ideas would be appreciated - i have emailed local councillors but nothing came back
thank you all for your speedy replies the lady in question has bought her own house and i don't know if this has prevented her from getting a grant in the past - any adaptions she has had to pay for and get someone to install it for her - thanks again
thank you all so much i wish you all lived near us - we've never had so much support - we just seem to be hitting a brick wall with every turn - she wouldn't like to be interviewed as she just accepts she won't get help - if anyone deserves a power chair this lady does - thanks again for your support
You need to badger social services, there are many things they can do to help, also enquire at CAB Citizens advice bureau. This really is a disgrace, she should NOT have to pay for all her own stuff. Does she get invalidity and mobility allowance, I`m sure she could/should. Please let us know on Y/A the outcome, we would all like to know how this pans out. Good luck.

We Bought a Portable Wheelchair Ramp So We Could Travel
My husband and I are recently retired, and are looking forward to being able to travel, and also having the time to do it. We had saved for this moment our entire lives, and could not wait to begin this exciting new chapter in our lives. The one thing we needed was portable wheelchair ramps , so my husband would be able to more easily get around. We found a store that sold them, and bought one the very next day. These days, you never know where we will turn up, and are thoroughly travelling the entire country, and having absolutely no limitations on mobility.
