I've got a double amputation and it'll be a while until I can get fitted for another leg. meanwhile I'd like to get out and have some traveling fun (at least). Sitting alone in the house is not my cup of tea. The slick solid tires on this chair are not workable in grass or gravel, nd I don't have anyone for the hard parts; i prefer it that way, but still need some pneumatic knobby traction.
Manual chair? You can usually get a bike shop or someone similar to switch your back tires from solids to pneumatics with good tread- but the trick is that you should get gray tires- not black. If your rims don't have an air stem hole, you may need new rims as well.
You can find the parts you need at http://www.ocelco.com.
Front tires probably need changing also. Don't worry about pneumatic, but at least go wider if you can.
Other tidbits...
- Try to make sure your center of gravity is right over your rear axle- it will distribute your weight for better 'flotation' over rough ground
- Make sure your brakes get adjusted to fit the new tires
- Look at your anti-tips. Make sure they are adjusted high enough, and if you don;t have any, consider them. Rough ground can toss you backwards easily
- Consider some safety gear- seat belt, cell phone, maybe even a small air horn.

Wheelchair, All Terrain w/ High Flotation Wheels,
I want to make an off road electric wheelchair for my son I tried used electric wheelchair motors but they dont have the power to go up very much of an incline. I tried to change the gear ratio, it climbs a little better but its slower. It runs on a 24 volt system 2 twelve volt batteries.
well why not use a modified winch motor One for a atv would probably be enough.Keep the double batteries wired in series (for 12volts)for a longer run time.
I suggest upgrading to a chain drive and sprocket setup. and perhaps tires that have a wider stance.
You could also add a suspension to the seat(part) by either using a spring or air setup something like 4 4"bags on the corners of the seat could be inflate around 30 psi(seems about right) with a simple 12v compressor and a adjustable 1-100psi valve would give a soft ride over the bumps(and ruts).
goodluck

I Had my uniform on and some medals attached to the wheelchair some stickers that said Iraq war veteran
I was screaming obentities, cussing and throwing punches in the air, then he came behind my wheelchair and slapped me in the back of the head, ripped off one of my ribbons. i thought he was gone, he can back, and ran off, he came back and knocked my wheelchair over and i was laying in the road knocked over in the parking lot, i was tipped over for 10 minutes and finally some other vets helpef me up i told them what happened he was not harmed, . I was so so fulled with rage its lucky the cops were not called
He got away with some guys came out and wiped the snotball off my face. he sput snot on me
Do you know of this happening to anybody or been the victim?
You are a liar and a troll. I saw almost this exact question posted a while back, except that version was told from the other side, i.e., from the perspective of the guy who supposedly did the spitting.
I have been pushing a lady in a wheelchair for a while and am constantly having to turn round, pull her backwards off the pavement, walk in the road and struggle back up again. This might happen 3 or 4 times in one trip.Probably, like me, you would not have realised the inconvenience till you have to do it. Also, some park across drops in the pavements put there for wheelchairs. So come on drivers, leave space for us,please. You might need it one day too.
Are you using the UK meaning for pavement (what is called a sidewalk in the US)? Call the cops on them, too!
Oh, and as you go by, leave an anonymous note under the wiper, saying "Sorry about the dent!" Let them go nuts trying to find it. This works especially well on BMWs and the like!

Off-road Wheelchair to Get Speed Boost « Inside the Green Garage
When they’re not designing clean vehicles of the future, the EcoCAR Challenge team is helping their fellow students at Michigan Technological University (MTU) change the world in other ways.
As part of their senior design project, six fellow students at MTU designed and built an all-terrain vehicle that makes the outdoors accessible to wheelchair-bound people. The working prototype is about 75% of the way toward being a production chair.
The advisor to the six-person senior design team is also the advisor to the EcoCAR Challenge team, and he suggested that they lend their expertise to help finish the project. The “off-road wheelchair” consists of a race car seat, off-road tracks, a standard wheelchair joystick and two marine batteries. The batteries last up to two hours. The EcoCAR team, which started by using Powertrain System Analysis Toolkit (PSAT) modeling (the vehicle simulation tool introduced to the team through the EcoCAR Challenge), is now preparing to make the necessary physical changes to the vehicle. When their work is done, the team intends to bump up the speed of the vehicle, add quick change batteries and install instrumentation for educational purposes.
