Anyone have any ideas? I care for my elderly inlaws, and their bathroom door is too narrow for their walkers and wheelchairs. I cannot find these aids that are less wide than their existing ones.
Offset door hinges allow the door to open another inch or more, which is sometimes all it takes, and are a simple and cheap solution.
Older homes can be tough to adapt- small doors, bad angles and halls, etc. You often need to get very creative, and sometimes you need to spend a bit.
For example, another option would be a ceiling-mounted track for a patient lift so you could transfer them in a roomier area and it would move them to where you need.
Or, you can use other options to bypass the bathroom- turn a corner of a more accessible room to a bathroom with a commode chair, brushing teeth in the kitchen, and and using bed baths most of the time.
The Carolift 40 hoist arm from Autoadapt is bendable both ways, providing an almost endless variety of positions for loading the wheelchair. This ...
Where are you wanting to be? There are a number of organisations who will hire you a canal boat which is specifically modified for disabled use.
In Scotland try Seagull Trust Cruises. web site below. They have a hire boat at Falkirk.
Elsewhere in England and Wales you will need to Google using "disabled boat hire" or similar

being in a wheelchair and not fitting into most bathroom doors i just wondered. When constructing a house...who decided that bathroom and closet doors would be more narrow???
Its all about the furniture. The BR and closets usually don't have furnishings such as beds, couches, etc., which require a large opening, and so the doors are narrower. Had the house been builot for someone in a wheel chair, you be assured it would be ADA compliant.
By the way, many Victorian era houses had DOUBLE front doors. Why?
So caskets could be moved through the door easily. Yup.

If they are disabled and in a wheelchair, that would suggest that they can't walk. The aisles in planes are too narrow for a wheelchair, so what do they do?
It would obviously be pretty dangerous to have a wheelchair on a flight anyway. I know that they are put into a seat, but what if they do need to use the restroom?
I'm a former Flight Attendant. We actually had an on-board wheelchair, specifically for going down the aisles.
To get on the plane, if the person cannot walk, at the door they would transfer from their own wheelchair, which would be gate-checked and waiting for them on arrival on the jetway, to a special aisle chair. We actually had people hired specifically to help those with mobility issues (maybe they had other duties but I wouldn't know). They weren't ground agents and sometimes were with a different company. Anyway, they then took this skinny long chair (without armrests) into the aisle and then helped the passenger in to his or her seat.
This chair was removed and then we had another chair that was folded and had its own stowage area which could be used in the aisle to move someone who couldn't walk. I honestly never needed to use it on one of my flights but it was always there.
There is at least one handicapped lav on U.S. based airlines. It's well marked and has a different style door usually.
Disabled passengers did not specifically sit at the bulkhead seats. In fact, if they were unable to walk at all, usually they sat in specific seats which had armrests that came up on the aisle to make it easier to slide in and out. They usually sat on the aisle. Those seated in bulkheads had to at least be able to get up to standing because the armrests were rigid.
For hygiene reasons, we didn't help disabled passengers with the restroom. If they were not able to do this by themselves, they usually had someone with them who helped. I did assist occasionally, like showing them where it was, opening the door, etc. but nothing "heavy duty" (i.e. placing the person on the toilet, etc.)
The services provided are actually regulated by law. An organization for disabled (general or for this person's specific issue) would be a better source of information if you need more details.
I am a female , my grandfather is totally disabled and can't walk. I am his sole caretaker and have to manuever him often. Our house is too narrow for a wheelchair. I often just carry him on my back wherever I need to transport him around the house.
He only weighs 140 lbs. though.
I used to be a life guard and we were taught to use the fireman's lift to carry an unconscious person. I think the same thing would be useful for you. Just google it. If your home is to narrow for a traditional wheel chair, why don't you get a regular desk chair that has wheels on it. I am assuming that you can fit through the doorway so a slim chair should work.
Good luck!
