So I dislocated my kneecap last Saturday. I popped it back in myself; it was really easy. The pain wasn't so bad, but I went to the ER. There, they put an immobilizer on and told me to go to an ortho. I went to the ortho, who said, after looking at x-rays, that nothing was wrong with my bones. However, when I am lying down or sitting and I try to lift my leg from the thigh, it doesn't move. No matter how hard I try. This caused alarm for the doctor, who is making me go for an MRI tomorrow. He told me that it means that one of my muscles mgiht be torn. He was very vague. It was a really weird feeling tryng to lift my leg and having it not move. In the meantime, I am going to school using a wheelchair, and using crutches at my home. Not being able to walk ahas caused major inconvenience and depression in my life. I was wondering if anyone else's situtation was similar.
Also, what does not being able to lift your leg mean?
And how long do you think I have until I can walk again?
You cannot lift your leg because your quad muscle (front of the thigh) has shut down as it usually does with any knee injury, especially one involving the knee cap. Your ortho needs to send you to see a physical therapist to have your knee rehab'd. You should be able to walk as soon as you get your quad muscle to be strong again which could take as little as a few days or a really long time if you don't have anyone show you how to get the strength back.

I had an MRI test done about 2.5 yrs ago. I was laying down while the pounding took place. I was fine for 2-3 hours of tests until about the last 15 minutes. I felt that the blanket on me was going to "catch fire". I could tell that my mind was beginning to hallucinate, and my practical logical side of my brain went out the door. The technician stepped out for a break, and I could not get anyone's attention. I panicked and began yelling her name and saying to get me out.
She finally returned, and I thought I survived without any wear.
Then, about 6 months ago, I went to a wax museum, and had to push my hubby (he's in a wheelchair), and 1/2 of the display was fine, well lit and wide aisles. But the 2nd section was dark (it highlighted monsters), and was narrow, had to go through doors over & over, and the corners....oh man! I had to literally pick up the wheelchair and bit by bit turn the chair to go around the tight corners (that's quite a feat, since I weigh 100# less than my hubby).
So, then I was trying to hurry it up, and it seemed to wind more & more and more & more doors and noises and I began to get panicky.
So, that is incident #1
Incident #2 happened about 2 wks ago. My hubby tries to save money on our utilities, so he doesn't have the ac on, but does run the overhead fan. The temp in the apt can average 84-87 degrees. It isn't bad if you get down to your skivvys. In any case, I was sitting there, watching TV and I suddenly felt that I was suffocating. I got up and felt like I had to run out of the apartment, but was able to settle myself back down. I literally felt that I was going to pass out & die right there.
Now, I have no history of panic attacks before these 2. Do you suppose that they are related to that MRI examination? Have you had something similar happen to you or someone you know? Would sailors in submarines have sensations like I had?

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.
Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.
The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to....

hello, 18mos, to 2yrs ago i was diagnosed with 2 herniated discs, L5 S1, 2yrs later, yesterday i had an mri etc. i was then advised that i had 7 new herniated discs! im crushed! i was also advised that i had arthritis! im just totally depressed man, it blew my mind. i knew something was wrong as i started waking up everyday very very sore, aching with shooting pain in my arms, hands, legs. i was put on 15mgs oxcodone tabs 5x a day, and they dont work. i asked to please be boosted on the medications as im in terrible pain and i have a business to run, im not ready to lay on my ass! i do not want to take oxycontin, and this is what they want me to take, theyve offered morphine, methadone etc. i have not wanted to take those if at all possible. but now, im in bad shape and ive accepted that my back has deteriorated substantially and im scared as my doctor has told me that i could end up in a wheelchair down the road etc. i dont want to believe this as ive been a cop, a champion bodybuilder, and very active with a business etc. but my quality of life is in the toilet as i have tried to go to a gym and ive forced myself to use a treadmill for 60 min etc. i dont want to lay around, and i dont want to take strong meds, but the doctors office is telling me i will be in pain the rest of my life, this really sucks! i thought i could get off of pain meds one day, and heal after 2yrs of physical therapy, chiropractic care, and 15mgs of oxycodone etc. but then out of nowhere i had an mri done and they told me of 7 new cervical, thoracic, lumbar herniations, sacral etc. its crazy! my question is, ive asked to see my new doc about my condition change etc. the last time i saw him i advised him of the pain issue, he hadnt seen my mri's yet. now that ive seen my mri report, should i ask for stronger meds like i have been for 4 months now? the doc didnt believe me in the last few months, THE MRI SHOULD TELL THE TRUTH! do i ask for stronger meds to improve my day to day living? what do i tell teh doc? hes 80 plus yrs old and doesnt hear patients, even the stafff says so.. thank you guys
I can understand 100% of where you're coming from. My life ended while I was in my mid 30's. All because of my spine. I too now have about 7 herniated disk, arthritis, impinged nerves, failed spine surgery, etc.. I've been through hell and back believe me. I have zero quality of life. My story is very long and there are some really difficult things that I've been through so I won't get into that. Just trust me when I say that I am VERY experienced in this. Just a FYI, I had to have a 3rd spine surgery to fix the screw-up of the first 2, I would have been paralyzed without the 3rd surgery from the waist down, it took over 8 hours, I was in critical condition and in ICU for 4 days. Blood transfusions for 3 days, the works. First of all the dosage of Oxy that your on is still baby steps. I'm a much higher one. The best advice that I can possibly give you is to find a new and younger pain management doctor. Mine is just like yours and knows nothing about the other options out there. I had to settle fo this guy when my good PM doc moved across the country and he is the only one left. My former 'good' PM doc and my surgeon had me on a higher dosage of Oxy for 3 years and once I changed doc's the new one reduced me down quite a bit. It changed my life for the worse. I gained 30 pounds in 2 months, I am no longer to leave the house, cook, clean, anything, etc.! I have educated myself on Oxy including the state and federal regulations. My PM doc is not even meeting their guidelines. You can still have a life, quality of life, if you find the right doctor. There is nothing wrong with having to take pain med's to give you that life, millions of us do. You can also look into the pain pump. It's inserted into your body and delivers your medication for you. The older doctors do not stay current on what is out there. You do need a higher dosage but a word of caution, by asking repeatedly your doc may think you are a 'drug seeker'. Sucks big time huh? We have got to be the most misunderstood people on earth, no one can imagine how much pain we are in or how difficult our lives become. I've been on disibilty for 9 long years and will never be able to work again. I would be happy just to be able to cook dinner and keep my home clean. My husband has to work and do everything else, thank God that he knows what I go through. My Internet is going to be shut down for awhile after today but I would love to be able to talk with you. I know of a support forum that you may find helpful. Email me right awy and I will give you their name and also maybe we can exchange personal email address's. By being able to share my experience and help to guide others, educate them, etc. then maybe my life won't be in vain. Please email me, I'd like to help.
I was diagnosed at 23, 10 years ago. The MRI then showed a 2.5 inch lesion in my upper spinal column, then 1 pea sized in my brain. This time around my doctor is just calling for a brain MRI. When asked he stated he conferred with another doctor who said a spinal MRI was unnecessary...why is it pointless when 10 years ago it wasn't, 7 years ago a 2nd MRI was done for both spine and brain. What the heck could be going on here? Im in rough shape today, a wheelchair since I broke my leg 7 years go and hand tremors.
Personally, I have only been diagnosed for a little over a year, however I have already had 4 separate MRIs. You obviously don't have them done frequently if you were diagnosed 10 years ago and have only had two done since. I don't see why they wouldn't do both spine and brain this time around. Although, only one of mine has combined both, which was during my diagnoses. From what I understand my symptoms are more brain lesion related, so maybe that's why they are more concerned on just getting the brain image. Could it be this way for you? Good Luck with everything!

Trinity: Update
Our baby girl was diagnosed with spina bifida on October 17, 2007. Spina Bifida is a neural tube defect that happens in the first month of pregnancy when the spinal column doesn't close completely. Her's is located at L-5/S-1, this is the lower part of her spine which is a good place to have it. She also developed hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain), this required her to have a shunt put in that she will have for life. Other conditions include full or partial paralysis and bladder and bowel control difficulties. Trinity also has been diagnosed with Chiari Malformation II of which she had a decompression done on August 27th. We ask for our family and friends to pray for the development of our...
