The wheel in question is hooked directly to the motor shaft.
Sorry this is a noob question.
A wheelchair motor runs on DC (direct current), thus one pole is positive, the other is negative. The rpm is limited by the governator and/or the load. By removing the governator the rpm no longer limited. Now you have to increase the power per rotation. This is done by raising the Voltage. So you have to connect another battery in series with the other one. Connecting a variabel resistor is reccomended if it doesn't already have one (throttle), because the motor can burn trough by the generated extra heat.
Yes! A regular Hospital-wheelchair with engine. The topspeed was 68Km/h. All homemade offcourse!
Does anybody know if there is a web site that sells cheap or rebuilt electric wheelchair motors. I've checked some sites, but they have a really crappy set up. I'm looking to spend anywhere from $75 to $180. I need about a 1-2hp motor for a robot i'm building.
Nothing from china! I'm not going to pay that shipping.
Why not call a company in your local area that does mobility services for seniors? They may even be able to give you one for free.

Wheelchair motors are typically rated 12 volts or 24 volts, but may be available for higher or lower voltages. If the motor is connected directly to a large battery without anything to limit the current, it will draw a high current until it reaches full speed, and then the current will drop. The initial current can be well over 100 amps. Since the initial current could damage the motor or the battery, the motor must be connected through a controller that will limit the current to a safe value.
If you know the motor's voltage and power rating (watts), you can divide the power rating by the voltage rating to get the current rating. If the power rating is a continuous value, it can probably be safely exceeded for short periods of time. Industrial DC motors are often rated to operate at 150% of rated current for up to one minute during every 10 minutes. Wheelchair motors may or may not have similar ratings. If you know only the peak power rating, you can operate the motor at that rating for a short time, but the motor will overheat if operated at the peak rating for too long.
If you search the internet, you will probably find wheelchair motors with power ratings ranging from less than 15 watts continuous to more than 750 watts peak.
My Dad's Motor-chair will only focus on the left. It turns left, backs up left, goes forward left. It won't even turn right not even a little bit. It's like it's dead. If you know what's wrong, can you tell me, so we can fix the chair. Thanks.
Get him out of the chair and prop up the back tires. Do both tires respond to the joy stick all of the time? If only one side does, the problem is in that side's motor, wiring, or clutching.
If the one side USUALLY responds, but not always, it is in the wiring or joystick.
my brother is so tall now that my mother and i have a hard time pushing him if there is an incline or decline, we aren't strong enough to push him uphill and we lose control if it goes downhill. this prevents us from taking him a lot of places. we need to have some sort of motorized wheelchair that the person pushing can control because he is too developmentally disabled to be able to drive and steer himself.
They call it an attendant control. It is very possible.

Drill, wheelchair or windscreen wiper motor? - Electronic Circuits ...
I would go with the wheelchair motors, simply because I doubt that the wiper or drill motors would be powerful enough. Battlebots do sometimes use wiper motors, but I would guess thats for weapon actuation, they are often prewired for reciprocal motion which would be helpfull for a hammering battle bot, but a problem for your platform.
