Medline Wheelchair

My mom has a medline excel 1000 wheelchair and when she rolls around and runs into a small bump or uneven space on the floor or ground she gets stuck and her body jerks forward. She then has to back up and use all her might to get over it. Does anyone recommend another wheelchair that has better traction to go over bumps or any other advise?

I believe that model has two large wheels and two small ones in front. For a non motorized wheelchair this is the best configuration of wheels. Is it possible that your mom is too weak to use a non motorized form of chair transport. Having trouble with ruts in grass of pavement would be understandable but if she can't maneuver a floor that is uneven she may need to get one of the motorized scooters that are frequently advertised on TV. If she is on medicare the place that sells them can help see if she can get it paid for by medicare. You will need a prescription from her doctor but I doubt that will be a problem if he is made aware that the manual wheelchair is not working for her. You need to consider whether she can safely drive one. The biggest barrier to that would be if she has some form of dementia as that interferes with judgment and there would be danger that she might run into something or someone or go out in traffic. I think the scooters are cheaper than electric wheel chairs but you might want to check that out. Also check out if medicare would pay for a motorized wheel chair. The nice thing about the scooters is that they have a tight turning radius making them much more maneuverable than the wheel chair.
