my doctor gave me a prescription for a wheelchair lift will medicare pay for 80% of it?

The first link is to the Americans with Disabilities Act website. The second is to Medicare.

I am assuming you qualify for medicare - but with the new laws - I'd let ADA or the medicare site - or AARP, with a strong advocacy involvement - third link - these sites will have the most up-to-date info.

what to do when medicare denies your claim for a wheelchair that you HAVE to have? ?

Tired of it!! Every year since i have know my friend she has had trouble getting what she needs. She is a parapalegic. She doesn't even apply for everything she could. This time I am raging mad. Her chair needs to be replaced- it broke the other week and she needs a new one. she can't do anything .anywhere without her chair. Who is medicare to say who gets a new chair? how can we handle this.

If she's working with a vendor I would say go with a different approved vendor and if not then she definitely needs to get up with a vendor to help her. A lot of whether you get a new wheelchair or not has to do with the way the request is worded. If insurance companies can find a way to weasel out of paying for something they will. It's a huge problem for anyone in a wheelchair...it's always been a general rule of thumb that a person can get a new chair about every 5 years. I've been in mine for 7 years and still got denied earlier this year. So basically it turns into a situation to where you're having to pay out of pocket to repair a wheelchair that's falling apart. It ticks me off too because what insurance companies (and apparently John Galt) don't understand is this isn't just something that's for convenience or is unnecessary. A wheelchair is a disabled person's "legs", it's our way to get around. When they deny us a new wheelchair it's like telling a person who can walk that they won't pay for them to get their leg repaired if it is broken. I'll get off my soap box now.

How much will medicare/medicaid allow me to spend on a wheelchair?

Does Medicare provide wheelchairs or a potty chair for the elderly?

Patient had ostomy surgery and will be going home soon.

Ok, the answer is YES!! If they are already on MEDICARE then all they need to do is make sure that the Dr. writes a prescription for the wheelchair and the bed-side commode. Then you just take that to a medical supply store and they will get the things for patient and send the bill to MEDICARE. But, if they already have a wheelchair or bed-side commode then NO, they will NOT pay for them. Either way, the DR. has to write the prescriptions. With out that MEDICARE wil not pay for any of it!! I Hope that I have Helped you in some small way!! Good Luck!!!!

how come we can only get a wheelchair every five years when they only last two from medicare services?

Interesting question, however my fathers last two chairs lasted him 12-14 yrs. each.

I cant imagine what you are doing with them that they only last two.

  • Denied A Wheelchair? « Spinal Cord Advocates

Many times the excuse that Medicare uses to deprive people of a powered wheelchair or scooter is based on the “in the home restriction”. This was obscure wording in their rules that Medicare never paid much attention to until they decided that they were spending too much money on wheelchairs, and on wheelchair users.

In the last few years this once little known and little used restriction has come into its own and is touching wheelchair users all over the country. More and more, Medicare is denying wheelchairs based on the fact that the need for the wheelchair is for use outside of the home.

What the restriction means is easy to understand once the funny language is peeled off and the core is exposed. If a person on Medicare needs a wheelchair for going distances to the store, doctors office, visiting family, the pharmacy, house of worship, or anyplace outside of the home they are in trouble. Medicare will buy a chair only for use in the home.
