is there a tax credit on the medical part of 2007 tax form for buying a car to accommodate a wheelchair?
Banner aXtraHand 2011

Just as an automobile does not qualify for a deduction for non-handicapped taxpayers...you'll not be able to deduct the entire cost of the car simply because one is required to use a wheelchair.

If, however, you had to outfit the car with special features to accomodate your handicap (hand controls, lift gate, special door), those additional expenses would be deductible to the extent your total medical expenses exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. Not the whole car...just the additional expenses to permit it's use by one who is medically handicapped.

Hope this helps.

Thinking of buying a medical supply business. Owners claim Medicare has audited for fraud. How to confirm?
emergency

My brother is thinking of buying a medical supply business (wheelchairs, medical equipment, etc.) The vast majority of revenue comes through Medicare reimbursement. I'm concerned about the potential that much of their reported revenue is due to fraud. I don't necessarily have a basis for this but just want to make sure. Anyone know where my brother can go to confirm that this audit happened. I don't want to trust any documentation provided by the current owners.

Thanks.

As far as DME companies are concerned, MEDICARE is very much on top of claims submitted to them. While it is common for DME companies to submit claims for products that were never provided to the patient Medicare is cracking down on that so I'm sure the audit took place. Seach CMS on google and I'm sure you will find some dept. to call to verify.

What is the protocol for asking my doctor to prescribe me a wheelchair?
The Waiting Game

I am currently five months pregnant with my second child and, due to pregnancy complications I have been having, I am not able to stay on my feet for long periods of time and am therefore on bedrest. I work retail, therefore my doctor has put me on indefinite medical leave from work. It has been three weeks so far, but I would really like to return to work. I would like to get a wheelchair for the remainder of the pregnancy so that I may work, but since I am on Medicaid, I need a "prescription" from my doctor to have them cover the rental. How would I go about asking my doctor for this prescription? Is there some kind of tactful way to ask without just demanding it?

I get this from patients a lot in my office. Actually you would be suprised what can happen if you just ask. Call your doctors office and leave a message for him/her to call you. when they call you just tell them exactly what you put here. You would like to go back to work and the only way you could do that is to have a wheelchair. You doc will more than likely agree with you and allow you to do so UNLESS your pregnancy is too dangerous. At that point I would listen to the doc and for the sake of your baby relax at home!

What is a good job for someone in a wheelchair?
aXtraHand LLC promo banner

I know I just asked this, but I put it in the wrong section.

I am currently a nanny, but my medical condition is getting to the point where the doctor is suggesting that I start using a wheelchair to make life easier and less painful for me. Other than a desk job, what would be the best job for me to do?

You can do anything you are interested in. If you are unable to go to others' homes because of inaccessibility, you might try babysitting children in your own home.

What kind of work interests you? Teaching? Acting? Lab Tech? Administrative? There is no reason to believe that you can't do something just because you are in a wheelchair; you will just have to do things differently than people who are not in wheelchairs. If you are concerned about transportation issues, there are a few jobs you can do from home: telemarketing, medical transcription, recording books on tape, jewellry making and other craftwork...

Visit your local employment centre and ask for an interest and aptitude inventory. A qualified career counsellor will help you to interpret the results and use them for setting education and career goals.

Good luck

What kind of medical assistance programs does IL have for someone who has no income.?
CH-6000: Universal Clamp to IV Pole (Information)

This person is under 65, has applied for Social Security Disability but has not been accepted and has no income to speak of. She has been diagosed with fibromyalgia, chronic pain disorder, severe arthritis, and degeneration of her back. She has been told that she needs surgery or else she will be in a wheelchair in a few years. From all the research that I have done, she doesn't meet the requirements for any of Illinois' medical assistance plans. Is there any sort of assistance that she can get?

She needs to go to the Social Services office where she lives. They can give her information on what is available for people in her situation.

  • Wheelchair User Evicted After Landlord Discovered Legal, Licensed ...

Bobbie Wooten, a full-time wheelchair user who suffers severe spasms, has been given three days' notice to vacate her apartment after management discovered two legally prescribed medical marijuana plants during a surprise inspection. Wooten has lived at the Silver City, New Mexico apartment complex for 6 1/2 years.

Spokesman David Kotin of Kay-Kay Realty says Bobbie Wooten violated the terms of her lease. "My lease provides for a drug-free environment," he said. "Obviously, she is in violation of my lease."

Wooten, 47, has a state license permitting her to possess up to four mature cannabis plants, as well as twelve seedlings and six ounces. She joined New Mexico's medical marijuana program last year, after a July 2007 law was passed permitting certain patients to possess and use medicinal marijuana.
