Disabled in Boston: Life in a Wheelchair

Two-time Boston University graduate Erin Murphy talks about getting around Boston in a wheelchair, the effect her disability has had on her life ...

Wheelchair?

Hi there!
I am looking for information about the day to day life of wheelchair users in order to design an accessible home.
Do you know of any informative website? Maybe you can tell me what you find easy and difficult to do at home?
Thanks for your help!

Doorways should be about 4" wider that the wheel chair.

Any level changes, such as sunken living rooms should have a ramp and front and back doors should have a ramp to the porch.

Bathrooms should be large enough to close door when wheel chair is inside and have enough room to turn the chair around and move it next to the commode, tub or lavatory.

There should be bars on the wall to hold for support in the bathroom for getting onto the commode and gettin into the bath tub.

Narrow hallways with sharp turns into a room should also be avoided.

If a woman is a black belt in karate could she break a mans back and put him in a wheelchair for life?

or is the power of martial arts just nonsense you see in films?

She could break his bank account and put him in the poorhouse for life.

Is it true that Don Revie finished his life in a wheelchair?

I hear that he had motor neurone disease. And then he finished the last year of his life in a wheelchair. Is this true and did he ever go out in this condition? I think its extremely sad how such a great manager finished up with the disease he had.

By the way, what is motor neurone disease and how is it caused?
Any photos of him in a wheelchair. I just want tio see how it affect someone physically.

Yes

He was out in public a lot in his wheelchair before his condition got really bad. He was in his wheelchair in the "Leeds United the Glory Years" video., if I remember correctly.

MND reduces muscle function. It is usually fatal but not in every case. The causes of it is not yet well understood.

=======================

There is a belief that footballers suffer more than their fair share of MND. A number of high profile players have suffered from it, but there have also been a lot of football players, so I am yet to be convinced.

How can I help my husband adjust to life in a wheelchair and help "chair- proof our home"?

My husband was recently paralyzied from the waist down, we have an 8 month old daughter and a 3 year old son. I know it will be especially hard for my son because he and his dad used to go play outside every night. How can i help my hubby adjust and "chair proof" the house?

I've been paralyzed waist down for 14 years. A suggestion from me would be to first make sure the couches, beds, etc. are arranged so that no important doors or appliances are blocked. Make wide, clear paths as best you can. Also remove any clutter in the way, keep things clean. Make sure all your stuff is clear out of his way, especially in hallways. I know from experience that excessive junk is annoying. You may have to make your doors wider and/or provide ramps. Provide a detatchable shower head and shower chair until the guy learns to transfer in and out of the bathtub. Get a one story house that he can get through easily--two stories are not practical as it will be incredibly hard if not impossible for the guy to make it up to the second floor even with help. Finally, tell him to WATCH WHERE HE'S GOING. If he's not careful those wheels will cause serious damage to walls, surfaces, pets, and human feet. Good luck.

  • 2009 Ms Wheelchair California First Runner Up: My 30th Birthday ...

For the month before my birthday, i collected spare change at my job and church for a fundraiser through Free Wheelchair Mission to raise funds to send wheelchairs to earthquake victims in Haiti. I also had many friends take "change jugs" to their jobs, gyms, school, churches, etc. I was amazed by the out pour of giving that people did to give other the gift of mobility. The cost of ONE wheelchair from Free Wheelchair Mission is just $59.20. Thank you to everyone who helped me not only celebrate 30 - but raise funds to change peoples' lives.
