Not sure if this can be answered. How to get wheelchair bound patients on to a bus with no lift?
Vehicle Lift

An exhibit bus is coming through town but has no lift. How would you get wheelchair patients up onto it to see the exhibit? It is a very old bus. Could car ramps be used through the back emergency exit? Please no jokes. This is for nursing home patients.

The fastest approach is to have a very strong person lift the wheelchairs and carry them onto the bus. Make sure that the person is careful not to drop the occupied wheelchairs.

A better approach is to construct a temporary ramp with plywood.

Still another approach is either
a) rent a U-Haul, Ryder, etc., truck with its deck at the same height as the bus emergency exit, push the wheelchairs up the ramp of the truck, and park the vehicles back-to-back, so that you can roll the wheelchairs from one vehicle to the other
b) get a bus with a lift, park the buses so that their emergency exits align, bring the wheelchairs onto the bus with the lift, and then roll them out one emergency exit and into the other.

How do you start a fundraiser? Child with a disability needs home equipment.?
Toyota_Mobility_RAV_080520508

A family with a child with a disability needs to come up with money to fund for a wheelchair lift/elevator to get him to the second floor in his home. Family lives in California (Los Angeles area). They already receive services through Regional Center and Medi-Cal(Medicaid) but the services won't fund for such equipment. How would you go about coming up with any money to help?

try dishcares.com they donate $60 for every new dish network activation. More and more people are getting it. Just tell them to go to this link http://www.dishcares.com and when they order through there they just send them an email to tell them to donate the $60 to (familys name / mailing address) for disabled childs medical equipment.

There is no need to handle money (customers order through website or phone and give a referral code, and based on that code, $60 is donated to the family.

it is also less messier than bake sales (more profitable too, my church had good success with this as well as my friends scout troop for a trip)

They will simply customize flyers letting people know the address, and that part is donated to the family.

Cost to get a home elevator for wheelchair user?
Toyota_Mobility_080520086

Has anyone ever investigated the cost of a home elevator system? For example, this one:
http://www.lucanus.ca/id50.htm
We've looked at stair lifts but an out of the way elevator would be preferable. I'd like just general costs, the websites never even hint at their costs .
Thank you
Forgot to add that it's just two stops (upstairs and downstairs).

We looked into them about a year ago and the costs vary widely depending on the bells and whistles you want to add. We were not looking at free standing models like the one you have the link to, we were looking at closet enclosures. (Where a closet space is used to conceal the elevator and its mechanisms.) For a very small one large enough to accomodate a wheelchair and one person, the cheapest one we found was in the $10,000 range with installation and a 5 year warranty on bare minimum accessories. You really have to email most of the manufacturers with your specifications for them to compile an estimate ( a lot has to do with whether there is electricity to the area, the space available for the lift mechanisms, etc.) Interestingly, if you have healthcare spending account funds, the elevator is not an eligible reimbursed expense even with a doctor's statement.

Handicaped lift van needed?
Toyota_Mobility_Highlander_080520110

I work in a nursing home, and we are in need of a van with a wheelchair lift. Does anyone know how I would begin to go about learning how to obtain one through a charity or fund raising etc. Any help is welcome.

I would recommend that you start by contacting your local mobility shop. They will not only be able to assess your nursing home's needs, but they should be able to point you in the direction of non-profit or government organizations that may be able to offset the costs of a wheelchair accessible vehicle. To find your local mobility shop, go to the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) website:

http://www.nmeda.org

That way you will know that they are reputable and certified.
