Foldable Wheelchair

Instead of buying 2 (one heavy one and one light one for outings), what are your thoughts about buying just one light one? The wheelchair would be for a sr citizen having difficulties walking. Thanks.

Full-time means different things to different people. Can they manage holding onto furniture at home? Is most of the use going to be inside stores/malls/church, or on even pavement (like parking lots.) Than the lightweight one would be OK.

But if full-time you mean all day long at home and on grass or dirt or rough sidewalks - than no. Lightweight chairs do not provide good support for a person to sit in it more than a few hours at a time and they are not designed for rougher terrains.

TI Lite is a light weight brand (under 20 lbs) & Quickie makes several light chairs. Sport chairs are usually lighter than regular but they cost more & are ridgid frame (seat back folds down, frame doesnt collapse). Her Dr. should have advice on this or if she has a PT thats the best source for chair info. Try going to www.quickie.com

I don't think my mother can wait in line for hours on end. Should I purchase a foldable wheelchair for her? Am I allowed to carry this on a airplane?

Call your airport and ask if they have wheelchairs available there. If so , you could ask where to get it or arrange to have it brought by an employee to a cetain spot to meet them. This couod be used right up to boarding time. When you reach your destination, ask for one when you exit the plane too. hey also have those golf carts in the airport for handicapped people.

Usually the light weight chairs are not intended for long term use and would probably wear out sooner. Consider the weight of the person also.
