I am reupholstering some kitchen chairs. I bought them new a few years ago, but the fabric was an off-white. You can imagine how they look now.
I've purchased new fabric, and was wondering whether it is necessary to buy new foam for the cushions. I've watched a few DIY videos online and some people cover tight over the old cloth.
I don't plan on doing that, but not everyone replaces the cushions. Are there any guidelines I should be familiar with?
It's really a judgment call. If the cushion is fairly clean and comfortable, why bother?
Terms used with foam cushions
I am making sectional cushions for my room, and I am making them out of foam and upholstering them with brown sued fabric. I am talking about the type of foam that you would put in a matress, or a sofa. My question is, is foam expensive? If so, what is a ballpark price for a piece of foam about the size of four egg crates making a square?
Chrissey must be talking about very thin foam because the price she paid is not for the type of foam you are referring to. I was a Home Decorating Specialist for JoAnn Fabrics for 9 years and am very familiar with foam.
Foam is usually sold in 24"widths and the depth is either 1", 2", 3", 4" or 5" thick. The one inch thickness will cost approx $9.99 per yard and the 5" is $68.00 per yard. (Yes, that is right $68.00 per yard). Those are the current JoAnn fabric prices for high density foam. I am sure you could contact a local upholstery shop or perhaps find some foam on line for less. This is a high ticket item because it is a petrolium by product.
You can order the foam by the yard and cut it yourself or order it pre-cut. Some stores who pre-cut it for you will not take any returns and may even not cut it properly if the employee does not have experience in cutting the foam. The best way to cut foam yourself is to use a straight edge to mark the foam with a magic marker then cut it, with a electric meat carver. Yup, a turkey carver. Just stand the foam cutting line at a right angle to the floor and apply pressure on the marked line and it will cut like butter.
When making slipcovers for, say, a 24"x24" piece of foam, cut the squares 24"x24" and do not add seam allowances. This, I promise you, allows for a proper fit. Getting a slipcover over a slab of foam can be challenging, so, place the foam in a plastic garbage bag and slip it into the slipcover. Then reach in and rip the bag and pull it out of the slipcover. For extra cush, you may want to wrap the foam with 6oz. batting and sew the edges so it does not scootch and lump up in the slipcover.

High-density memory cell foam was originally developed by NASA to relieve G-force strain during lift off.
Temperature- and pressure-sensitive, it molds to the body?s contour, offering optimal comfort.
Dissipates pressure while conforming to body contours.
Yuck... our couch got soaked a couple of days ago, and the only thing that hasn't dried are the large foam cushions (the ones that you sit on)... they feel dry, but when I apply pressure (like by sitting on them) I can feel that they are still wet in the center. They're much to large to put in my dryer, and I can't figure out any way to get them dry. Anybody have any great ideas? They're going to start getting musty soon...
Thanks!
Try putting several layers of towels under and over them on the floor or another hard surface, then walk on them barefooted. That may squeeze out some of the water. Then stand them on edge if possible and run a fan so the air goes across both sides or put them outside if the weather allows.

my cat peed on my couch and went into the foam cushion, what if anything will get the smell out?!
Try Urine Gone. You can get it at Wal Mart for 10 bucks. It works well, in my experience.
How can you unflatten the foam?
it'll unflatten, trust me.

No More Back Problems Thanks to GB's Foam Cushion : Geoff Boycott ...
In 1968, Geoffrey suffered a back injury while playing for England in the 3rd Test Match against Australia at Edgbaston. The injury, a swollen disc and loss of fluid, threatened to bring his career to a premature end. Following two months of fast and intensive physio, he eventually returned to the game. But the problem had not gone away. Due to the loss of fluid in the disc, the spaces in the vertebrae narrowed and, over the years, the discomfort grew worse. Years of physiotherapy could not resolve the pain. Then, by pure chance, he hit on the idea that the problem could be directly linked to posture.
The idea came to Geoffrey during an evening at a theatre in Singapore in which the seats were very low. He noticed that a child’s booster cushion had been left in the empty seat next to his and he decided to sit on it. As a result, he enjoyed the show and did not suffer from the usual discomfort in his back. Geoffrey realised that today’s so called comfortable armchairs and soft padded settees are often too low to the ground, causing a sitting posture where the knees are above the level of the hips, causing the back to hollow.
